Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: Saturday Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium, the Augusta GreenJackets (11-12, 9-9) squared off against the Delmarva Shorebirds (13-9, 10-7) for game two of a four game series. GreenJackets RHP Sam Coonrod (1-1 ERA 5.58) coming off his first loss of the year on April 26th against the Rome Braves looked to bounce back in the win column tonight. The Shorebirds sent out the LHP Brian Gonzalez (1-0 ERA 4.38) who was searching for his second win of the season. In a game full of lead changes and big run innings, the Shorebirds came out on top with a score of eleven to ten.

The top of the first inning did not go as planned for either team's starting pitcher. Trouble started for Sam Coonrod when there were two outs in the top of the first inning. Shorebirds catcher Alex Murphy reached on a hit by pitch and designated hitter Conor Bierfeldt hit a two run homer over the center field wall to allow the Shorebirds to jump out to an early two run lead. Coonrod was able to force first basement Riley Palmer to fly out to right fielder Johneshwy Fargas to end the top of the first.

The 2014 second round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants, catcher Aramis Garcia is starting to bloom into his true form after the first month of the 2015 season. Garcia is now on a four game hit streak and during his streak the catcher has nearly doubled his RBI count (Going from 6 RBI to 13 RBI). Tonight, in the first inning with the bases loaded Garcia hit a three run double that put the GreenJackets out in front making the score three to two.

After struggling in the first inning, pitcher Sam Coonrod got into a grove on the mound for the GreenJackets. Coonrod struck out five of nine batters that he faced between the second and fifth innings. Coonrod finished the night after pitching five and one third innings giving up five earned runs and seven striking out seven. Coonrod will walk away tonight with a no decision for his efforts.

The Delmarva Shorebirds who were down six to four were not willing to just go quietly into the night. The second part of the game is when the Shorebirds did all of their damage. Delmarva was able to put two runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth, four runs in the seventh, and finally two runs in the eighth inning to jump out to a eleven to six lead.

Down to their final at bat with a six run deficit staring down at the GreenJackets, it could have been very easy just call it a night and head for the showers. For this GreenJackets squad who is lead by a manager who brings energy to every single inning the GreenJackets would not go down without a fight. Lead off man Johneshwy Fargas singled on a ground ball to right field to bring some life back into the GreenJackets dugout. Travrious Relaford then began the GreenJackets rally cry with a one out triple to center field that allowed Fargas to score. All the sudden hits became contagious for the GreenJackets. Newcomer for this homestand Seth Harrison answered right back with a triple of his own to score Relaford. Third baseman Jonah Arenado who is now on a six game hit streak knocked in Harrison cutting the Shorebirds lead to two runs. After a pitching change by Shorebirds manager Ryan Minor who called upon his RHP Derek Bleeker from the bullpen to end pitch to Andrew Cain. With Arenado on second base, Cain cracked a seeing-eye-single to center field. Arenado was able to score from second base giving the GreenJackets their fourth run of the inning. With Andrew Cain representing the tying run at first and the winning run at the plate the GreenJackets were not able continue on with their rally. Aramis Garcia flew out to center field and John Riley struck out to end the game. . Garrett Cortright (2-1 ERA 1.00) will take the win, Conor Kaden (1-2 ERA 7.04) receives the loss and Donnie Hart picks up his sixth save of the season.
