LYNCHBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-3) evened the series against the Lynchburg Hillcats (4-3) with a thrilling, 6-4 win in extra innings.

The 'Birds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run single by Rolphy Cruz that scored Elio Prado and Anderson De Los Santos.

The advantage grew to 3-0 in the third on a two-out, RBI single by Noelberth Romero.

Starting pitcher, Zack Showalter helped set the tone for Delmarva by tossing a strong 3.2 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit with no runs while striking out six.

The Hillcats got on the board in the fifth inning with a two-run homer by Angel Zarate to pull Lynchburg within one at 3-2.

Edgar Portes entered in the sixth and kept the score 3-2 by dealing three perfect innings to keep it a one-run game entering the ninth. But the Hillcats made their move by producing back-to-back doubles from Robert Lopez and Zac Fascia to tie the game at three while putting the winning run now at second. But Portes would dig deep and work himself out of trouble by striking out a pair, stranding Fascia at third base to force extras.

In the tenth, the Shorebirds quickly loaded the bases with nobody out, and they cashed in with an RBI single by Collin Burns to take a 4-3 lead. Samuel Basallo then provided the much-need insurance runs with a long single off the center-field wall to plate home two more, giving Delmarva a 6-3 edge.

Portes returned to the mound in the bottom half of the inning, and this time he would finish the job by getting the final three outs with just the automatic runner scoring in the frame as the Shorebirds defeated the Hillcats 6-4 in ten innings.

Edgar Portes (4-2) earned the win for Delmarva with Samuel Vasquez (0-5) taking the loss for Lynchburg.

The Shorebirds will now look to gain the series lead on Sunday afternoon with Moises Chace getting the start against lefty Adam Tulloch for the Hillcats with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
