Delmarva Holds off Hillcats in Extras

July 1, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

The Lynchburg Hillcats comeback attempt fell just short as the Delmarva Shorebirds won 6-4 in extra innings on Saturday night.

The Hillcats trailed the entirety of the game before tying the game in the ninth inning. The Hillcats had the winning run in scoring position with no one out, but were unable to find a way to bring him home.

Delmarva struck first in the second inning as Elio Prado and Anderson De Los Santos scored on an RBI single from Rolphy Cruz. Then in the third, they would add one more as Carter Young would touch home on a Noelberth Romero single.

Lynchburg would creep a bit closer in the fifth as Angel Zarate would smack his first home run of the year over the right field wall. The two-run shot would score Guy Lipscomb to give the Hillcats a bit of life.

The game would remain at 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth when Robert Lopez would lead off the inning with a double into deep center field. Zac Fascia would drive him home with a double of his own, giving the Hillcats an opportunity to win the game in the ninth.

However, Lynchburg would strand him at third to end the inning and send it to the tenth.

The Hillcats would fall apart in the top of the tenth as three runs would score off of Samuel Vasquez. After loading the bases, Collin Burns would drive home Rolphy Cruz with a single to center. A little later, Samuel Basallo would break the game open for the Shorebirds with a two-run single to essentially put the game out of reach.

Lynchburg would get a run back in the bottom of the tenth as Tyresse Turner would score on a Guy Lipscomb sacrifice fly. The Hillcats would get the tying run to the plate later in the inning, but the comeback would fall just short as a strikeout ended the ballgame.

Tensions flared after the final out was recorded as chirping from the dugouts caused some commotion after the game. However, no one came to blows as the managers and umpires would keep the two teams apart.

Lynchburg and Delmarva will meet again on Sunday afternoon for game five at 2 p.m. at Bank of the James Stadium.
