Shorebirds and Suns Split Doubleheader

Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds scored eight runs in the final two innings to defeat the Hagerstown Suns in game one, 8-6, and dropped game two of the doubleheader 7-2 on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium.

In game one, the Suns sprinted to an early lead in the second. Four hits including a double by Brian Goodwin to deep center field produced three runs.

The Suns added three more runs in the fourth to build a 6-0 lead. Jason Martinson capped the inning with a two-run single through the left side of the infield.

The Shorebirds recorded just two hits over the first five innings. In the sixth, the Shorebirds exploded for five runs to cut the deficit to 6-5. Connor Narron led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Mikey Planeta. Then, Mychal Givens singled home Narron. Nicky Delmonico followed with a double to cut the deficit to 6-2. Brenden Webb launched a three-run homer to right field to slice the deficit to 6-5.

In the seventh, the Shorebirds took their first lead of the game. Gabriel Lino and Narron hit back-to-back singles. After a walk loaded the bases, Lino scored on a wild pitch and pinch runner Kyle Hoppy also scored on an errant throw by the catcher Cole Leonida, who tried to throw out Lino at home. Planeta singled to right-center to give the Shorebirds an 8-6 lead.

David Baker faced the minimum over three perfect innings to earn the win. He struck out four and did not allow a hit.

In game two, the Shorebirds went down 5-0 after three innings.

Their lone runs came in the seventh on a two-run homer to right field by Connor Narron, his fourth of the season. Wynston Sawyer reached on a double to the wall in right-center field.

Zach Fowler entered for Tim Berry in the fifth and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. Berry allowed 11 hits and seven runs and was pinned with the loss.

Hagerstown starter Alex Meyer earned the win over five shutout innings. He allowed two hits and fanned seven batters.

The Shorebirds and Suns play the series finale on Sunday at 1:05pm.
