GREENVILLE, NC- Blake Swihart had two hits and drove in five runs for the Greenville Drive as they beat the Charleston RiverDogs 10-4 on Saturday night in South Atlantic League action at Fluor Field in front of a crowd of 6,229.
Greenville improves to 29-26 on the season and can take the series with a win tomorrow. The RiverDogs fell to 33-22 with the loss.
The Drive grabbed the early lead in the first inning with four runs off starter Scottie Allen (1-4). Keury De La Cruz started the rally by hitting a one out triple to right-center and a David Renfroe single scored De La Cruz for a 1-0 lead. Drew Turocy (1-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) then rocketed a triple into the right field corner to bring in two more runs and Turocy came home on a sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning.
Greenville's offense got to Allen again in the third, loading the bases with one out on a single and two walks. Swihart (2-2, 4 RBI, run) then cleared the bases with his team's third triple of the night, making the score 7-0.
Gary Sanchez (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, run) got the RiverDogs on the board in the fourth with a two-run homer, his sixth in his last eight games. Angelo Gumbs followed with a triple and he scored on a single by Reymond Nunez, cutting the deficit to four. Greenville starter Henry Owens (5-2) yielded no more runs to Charleston, as he struck out five in as many innings without walking a batter.
In the sixth, the RiverDogs closed to within three runs when Tyler Austin and Sanchez singled and Austin scored on a groundout by Nunez, but it was as close as they would get. The Drive got that run back and then some in the bottom of the inning. Swihart and Matt Marquis led off with a single and a double and both men later scored, Swihart on a groundout, Marquis on a wild pitch. Swihart drove in the last run of the game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly.
The fourth and final game of this series will be Sunday afternoon at 4:05 pm. RHP Will Oliver (1-2, 4.38 ERA) will pitch for the RiverDogs and RHP Madison Younginer (1-5, 5.17 ERA) is Greenville's scheduled starter.
