New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Sean Shoffit smashed a two-run triple as part of a 2-for-3 night, but an unearned run lifted the Trenton Thunder to a 6-5 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before a season-high crowd of 6,210 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Saturday night.
Noah Hall (0-for-4, BB, R) broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh when his grounder to first was mishandled and thrown away by Brian Dopirak, allowing Jorge Vazquez (1-for-5, 2B, R) to score the go-ahead run.
New Hampshire (22-21) nearly managed to tie it in the bottom of the ninth off Trenton closer Amaury Sanit. Pinch hitter Cody Haerther led off with a double to right before Todd Donovan (1-for-3, BB, SB, 2 R, RBI, SAC) sacrificed pinch-runner Bryan Kervin to third. Adam Calderone (1-for-5) then hit a low dribbler back to Sanit, who tossed out Kervin trying to score.
Sanit, who was just activated from the Disabled List, earned his third save as Trenton (19-20) beat New Hampshire (22-21) for the second straight night.
Brandon Magee (1.1 IP, 5 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 2 WP) struggled in his third start for the Fisher Cats, allowing five straight Thunder batters to reach base, and four runs to score, in the second inning. Hall, Kyle Anson (0-for-3, 2 BB, R) and Marcos Vechionacci (1-for-3, BB, R) all walked; James Cooper (1-for-3, RBI, R, SAC) and Eduardo Nunez (2-for-4, RBI, 2B, BB) both had RBI singles; Colin Curtis (2-for-4, RBI, R, BB) added a run-scoring ground out and Cooper scored on Magee's second wild pitch of the inning, giving Trenton a 5-1 lead.
The Fisher Cats' comeback bid started against Thunder starter Ryan Pope in the bottom of the second when David Cooper (2-for-4, 2B, R) singled, Al Quintana (1-for-3, 2B, BB, 2 R) doubled and Shoffit ripped his team-leading third triple of the season to deep center, scoring both runners for a 5-3 Thunder lead.
Brad Emaus (1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI) drew New Hampshire to within 5-4 with an infield single off Pope in the bottom of the fifth, plating Donovan (single).
The Fisher Cats tied the game, 5-5, against winning pitcher Kanekoa Texeira in the sixth inning when Quintana walked and came around to score on Donovan's ground out.
Texeira (5-2) retired the final nine batters he faced to notch the victory. The right-hander allowed one run on two walks in three hitless innings.
Bubbie Buzachero (1-2) was handed the tough-luck loss after yielding only an unearned run in 3.1 innings of relief. The righty allowed two hits and fanned one.
The teams traded runs in the first inning as Trenton broke through on an RBI double by Vazquez. New Hampshire answered in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Emaus.
The Fisher Cats and Thunder meet in the third game of their four-game set Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. Trenton left-hander Wilkin De La Rosa (1-1, 2.55) matches up with New Hampshire lefty Luis Perez (3-4, 3.25). Radio coverage begins at 12:45 with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy and Bob Lipman.
