Connecticut Defenders News Release
PORTLAND, ME- After squeaking by in game one, Connecticut delivered a blowout win 12-1 in game two of a four game series over the Sea Dogs Saturday afternoon from Hadlock Field.
Connecticut plated lone runs in the first three innings but pulled away with a five run sixth, capped off with a two run homerun by David Maroul to cruise to their fourth straight win.
The day belonged to Defenders starter, LHP-Madison Bumgarner (3-0) as he dazzled the Sea Dogs in his first career start versus the Red Sox affiliate. Bumgarner struck out the first five batters he faced in route to his third win of the season. Madison tossed six scoreless innings allowing only two hits, walked one and struck out ten, tying his teammate Tim Alderson for the team high.
The Defenders offense blew up in the fifth inning when they tacked on five more runs to an already 3-0 lead. 1B-Brett Pill leadoff with a walk, LaTorre reached on an error, and 3B-Sharlon Schoop extended his hitting streak to ten games with and RBI single to left. CF-Mike McBryde sac bunted runners into scoring position to setup 2B-Brock Bond for a two RBI double. Maroul came in for an injured DH-Brad Boyer who left the game with a mild hamstring strain and in his second at bat, lifted a two run homerun over the left field wall to give Connecticut an 8-0 advantage. All five runs came off of former Defender, RHP Justin Hedrick.
Connecticut added three more runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth. Bond finished 2 for 4 with a double, a single, 2 RBI, a walk, scored three runs and got hit by a pitch. Schoop went 3 for 4 with a pair of singles, a double, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Maroul, in a substitution role delivered his best performance going 3 for 4 with a pair of singles, a homerun and four RBI.
The Sea Dogs mustered their only run in the eighth inning on back to back wild pitches by RHP-Dan Griffin escaped LaTorre and 3B-Zach Borowiak scored after leading off with a double.
Portland's starter, RHP-Blake Maxwell (0-4) suffered the loss after only three innings of work, allowing three earned runs off of eight hits and struck out two.
Tomorrow's matchup has the Defenders LHP-Jesse English (2-2) toeing the rubber against the Sea Dog's RHP-Ryne Lawson (0-2) in game three. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm at Hadlock Field.
