Charleston, WV - Kannapolis right hander Charlie Shirek held the West Virginia Power to just a run on a pair of hits over seven innings on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park as the Intimidators defeated the Power 8-1 to take the third game of the series.
Kannapolis struck first with a three-run first inning and never looked back. Jorge Castillo brought in Eduardo Escobar with a sacrifice fly to give the Intimidators a 1-0 lead before Jim Gallagher's two-out double brought in the final two runs of the inning. The Power scored their only run in the bottom of the first on Steffan Wilson's RBI single.
Jordan Danks ripped a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning to increase the Kannapolis lead and the Intimidators pulled away with a three-run fifth inning. Christian Marrero and Matt Inouye smacked back-to-back two out run scoring doubles and Escobar singled in the final run of the inning. Gordon Beckham hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to plate the final run of the game.
Shirek (6-6) retired 11 batters in a row from the first inning through the fourth. He struck out eight over seven frames while allowing just a run on two hits in a winning effort. Wily Peralta (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits over an inning and a third. Jose Garcia and Mike Ramlow both tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
The Power fell to 76-61 on the year and 44-24 in the second half with the loss. The Intimidators improved to 66-67 on the year and 35-28 in the second half with the win. Steffan Wilson has knocked in 98 runs and needs four over the next two games to tie the franchise record. He has reached safely in 17 straight games. Eric Farris singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games. West Virginia has been held to two runs on six hits over their last 16 innings.
The Power will continue the five game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators to finish the regular season at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday night. The Power will start right hander Evan Anundsen (12-7, 3.99) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Levi Maxwell (14-5, 3.18). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
