Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Derrick Mitchell went 3-4, Vance Worley blanked the Shorebirds for five innings, and Lakewood knocked off Delmarva 6-1 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. In the process, the BlueClaws handed Sean Gleason just his second defeat of the season overall, both of which have come against Lakewood.

After Gleason retired Herman Demmink to begin the game, Freddy Galvis and Matt Rizotti doubled back-to-back to give the Claws the quick 1-0 edge. Tim Kennelly followed up the two-baggers with a single up the middle to make it 2-0 after half an inning.

Lakewood tacked on another run in the fourth on Demmink's sacrifice fly, and would score a pair of unearned tallies in the sixth after Delmarva second-baseman Ryan Adams made his 51st error of the season, setting a new South Atlantic League record. Adams broke Juan Samuel's 27 year old record with his errant throw with two outs in the top of the six. A pair of singles followed the miscue to give the Claws a 5-0 lead. Two innings later, another wild throw from Adams was scored as his 52nd error of the year.

The Shorebirds were able to break up the shutout in the last of the eighth when Anthony Martinez singled to score Tyler Henson from second. Little more offense was to be had off the Lakewood arms.

Five days after Worley was drilled for seven runs at FirstEnergy Park by the Shorebirds, the young right-hander responded by striking out nine over five scoreless innings to earn the victory. Moises Melendez pitched the next three innings, surrendering the lone run in the eighth. Chris Kissock tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory for Lakewood.

While neither Lakewood nor Delmarva are headed to the postseason, the best overall record for the entire season in the division is still up for grabs. The Shorebirds need to beat the BlueClaws in the final two games to overtake them for the best record in the Northern Division.
