SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes midfielder, Shea Salinas and District 5 San Jose City Councilmember Nora Campos, visited a crowded assembly hall at Mount Pleasant High School Wednesday, as part of the Amway Global Kicks for Kids Program.
Campos kicked off the school visit by talking to the kids about the importance of being active, eating well and working hard. She also explained the role she plays in the city council and the many ways she can work to positively affect not just the lives of the students, but the lives of all those who live in San Jose. The most important bit of wisdom that she passed on to the children is the importance of not giving up so that one day, they may grow up to affect the lives of others as well.
Campos passed on the microphone to Salinas, who was greeted with deafening cheers and applause. Like Campos, Salinas also focused on why the students need to be active and eat well. The 22-year old connected with the students by telling stories of the eating choices he made in high school and how he learned quickly that eating a healthy diet improves one's overall quality of life. Salinas discussed the importance of eating a healthy, hearty breakfast to give you the energy you need for each day's activities.
The Texas native then switched to the importance of being active. He encouraged the kids to get outside and play sports or just go for walks. To emphasize the point Salinas pulled three members from the audience to challenge him in a soccer skills demonstration. Several tricks later, after much laughter and applause, a young man from the high school's soccer team stood victoriously on stage. To reward him for his efforts Salinas handed over an official Earthquakes soccer ball.
To wrap up the afternoon, Earthquakes staff handed out 150 jersey replica shirts and 150 tickets donated by Amway Global to the students to attend the Earthquakes match on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. against the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Earthquakes and Amway Global teamed up to create the Amway Global Kicks for Kids program in 2009. Through the program, Earthquakes players will visit 15 schools or community centers in the Bay Area to discuss the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. The next school visit will take place on Wednesday, April 8 at Clyde Arbuckle Elementary School in San Jose.
