Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks scored first and last, and the final goal was decisive Friday in a 4-3 overtime victory at Young Arena against the Green Bay Gamblers.

Forty-four seconds into a power play and 1:40 into the extra period, Hayden Shaw skated across the high slot and blasted the winning goal into the net off the crossbar. It was his fourth point in as many USHL games, all on the power play.

Breaking Gambler pressure, the Black Hawks had scored the game's first goal at 8:33, when Austin Vieth sped to the offensive zone for an opportunity. His shot created a rebound for Mark Friedman to knock across the goal line. Green Bay tied the game seven minutes later during a power play when Drew Best put the puck under Cal Petersen's right pad from close range. Then the Gamblers swung ahead at 17:30 when the disk was poked free at the top of the crease and swatted into the net by Sebastian Weberg.

The Black Hawks seized the lead again during the second period with two goals separated by 26 seconds. Zach Sanford fired a wrist shot past the stick side of Jared Rutledge at 9:43 coming up ice on a rush. On the following shift, Patrick Russell pushed Waterloo back in front, sending in a second chance from a sharp angle.

Evan Tironese set up the extra period, jumping into a play with just under six minutes to remaining, taking a drop pass from Nick Schmaltz, and snapping the puck into the net. The Hawks were outshot for the first time this season as the Gamblers had a 32-25 edge in chances. Petersen made 29 saves for the win.

Next weekend, the Hawks go on the road to face the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux City Musketeers. The team returns to Young Arena on November 2nd for a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup matchup versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
