The rebound bounced around in front of netminder Michael Lackey and on a third wack, Gaus finally connected, evening the score. The goal was Gaus' first USHL tally, and came after the forward had numerous golden opportunities earlier in the game.

Jarrid Privitera hopped onto the ice and drifted into the slot where Robinson found him. Christian Frey dropped to the ice, but Christian Fisher beat him to it and slid the puck five-hole to make it 1-0 Team USA at 7:21.

The Fighting Saints peppered Lackey, and were finally able to break through late in the game's first frame. Former Team USA skater and now Fighting Saint Shane Eiserman let a wrist shot go from just inside the Team USA blueline. Lackey made the save, but the rebound popped into the slot where Jarrid Privitera collected it and converted for his first goal of the season on a rebound at 16:29 to tie the game at one.

In the second period, the Fighting Saints were able to get their first lead of the game, but the advantage didn't last long. Dubuque went up 2-1 on a powerplay goal from Seamus Malone. Team USA attempted to clear the puck but Alexx Privitera and Karson Kuhlman combined for a great play to keep the puck in. Kuhlman sent it to Jarrid Privitera who fed Malone. He streaked in on goal and made no mistake, roofing a shot over Lakey's glove to make it 2-1 Dubuque.
