Omaha Lancers News Release
WATERLOO, IA - In the first game of a three-games-in-three nights road trip, the Omaha Lancers scored the first two goals of the contest, but ultimately saw their five-game season-opening winning streak and Omaha goaltender Cole Bruns' USHL-record five-plus game shutout streak come to an end in a 4-2 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks on Thursday at Young Arena. The Lancers loss, coupled with the Waterloo win, left Omaha at 5-1-0 and in a three-way tie for first place in the USHL's Western Conference standings with the Black Hawks and the Sioux Falls Stampede.
Balsta, Sweden native and slippery first-year centerman Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson got the scoring started for the Lancers at 3:54 of the opening period, when fellow Swede Niklas Folin hit "JFK" with a deep stretch pass and the as-yet uncommitted forward buried his second goal of the season to make it 1-0 Omaha. Just over two minutes later, Union College recruit and Lancers assistant captain Tyler Hynes buried a rebound off a Steve Johnson center-point drive for his first tally of the season and fifth point of the campaign at 6:16.
Waterloo was quick to counter though, as Zach Sanford ended Bruns' historic shutout streak with a blast high to the glove side at 9:41 of the first on a play that developed quickly following a Waterloo faceoff win. Two more goals in the period from Hayden Shaw and Jake Horton, respectively and, after a scoreless second period, another Horton tally that came just seconds into the third period made it 4-2 Hawks. A late Lancers rally ramped up the tension, but several late-game penalties spelled doom for Omaha in their first loss of the season.
Bruns' record streak, the longest of its kind in the 66-year history of the USHL, officially stands at 5-plus games and 309:41 of game-action and in the wake of Thursday's defeat, Bruns continues to lead the league with a 0.67 goals against average, a .973 save percentage and a 5-1-0 record.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a Friday trip to the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Illinois as Omaha continues their three-game road trip with their first clash of the season vs. the Chicago Steel at 7:30 pm. Full coverage of Friday's game begins with the "Valpak Pregame Show" at 7:15 pm on 1620 "The Zone" and FASTHockey.com with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
