Hawks Have Solid Homecoming
October 18, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks returned from a two-game trip Thursday to top the previously undefeated Omaha Lancers 4-2 at Young Arena.
Omaha started the scoring and the Black Hawks finished it during a surprisingly offensive first period. The Lancers got on the board at 3:54 when Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson received a long pass at the Black Hawks blue line and fired a shot which trickled through Cal Petersen's equipment. The Lancers made it 2-0 less than three minutes later as Tyler Hynes knocked in the rebound of a Steven Johnson shot.
Waterloo began to seize control midway through the frame; after a failed clearing attempt, Zach Sanford received a puck below the right hash mark and lifted a chance from close range over the shoulder of Cole Bruns. After five consecutive shutouts to start the campaign, it was the first goal allowed by the Lancers this season. Hayden Shaw tied the contest during a power play at 14:54 with a clean wrist shot from the left point. Then the Hawks went ahead at 17:49; Sanford took the puck away in the right wing corner, feeding Jake Horton for a low shot which he snapped into the net from a sharp angle.
Following a scoreless second, the Hawks tacked on another goal just 16 seconds into the third as Horton's shot ricocheted to the top corner near the tail end of a power play. Petersen made the lead stand up during a magnificent final period where he turned away 15 Lancer shots. For the night, he delivered 30 saves as Waterloo edged Omaha in chances 33-32.
The Black Hawks conclude the team's annual breast cancer awareness week Friday with a game against the Green Bay Gamblers at 7:05. The pink jerseys the team wore Thursday will be auctioned, with profits benefitting local breast cancer support organization Beyond Pink TEAM. Good seats for the game still remain and can be ordered by calling (319) 291-7680 or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
