Somerset Patriots News Release
Camden, NJ - Ben Davis and Eddy Camacho retired 22 of the last 24 batters and Chris Malec hit a game-winning single in the 9th as the Somerset Patriots fell to the Camden Riversharks 3-2 at Campbells Field on Tuesday night. The Riversharks snapped the Patriots four-game win streak.
After Chris Walker reached on a one-out single against Jeff Kennard and stole second base, Malec came up two batters later and served a base hit down the right field line, scoring Walker to even up the series at a game apiece. Kennard (3-1) had kept up a spotless bullpen effort which began Monday until the Malec hit delivered just the third Somerset loss in 14 games.
The Patriots had the early advantage against Davis with two-out run scoring hits from Josh Pressley in the 1st and Iggy Suarez in the 2nd. However, Suarezs base hit would the final one the Patriots picked up in the affair, as Davis retired the next 16 batters he faced, finishing 7.0 innings allowing just the two runs on four hits with one walk.
Former Patriots Sean Smith and Teuris Olivares did the damage for Camden in the 3rd against starter Bill Pulsipher. Smith led off the frame with a double but was hanging at second two batters later with two outs when Olivares worked a long at-bat. The tenth pitch of the duel was sent down the left field line, barely clearing the fence to tie the game at 2-2. Pulsipher put runners on base in every inning but allowed just the two tallies in 5.1 innings of work, striking out four while yielding seven hits and three walks.
Eddy Camacho picked up in the 8th where Davis left off after seven. Camacho retired the first five batters he faced, totaling 21 consecutive Patriots retired. With two down in the 9th, Pressley and Matt Hagen drew back-to-back walks, putting the go-ahead run at second base. But Camacho (6-0) retired Noah Hall to end the threat.
Ben Grezlovski came on in the 6th with the go-ahead run at 2nd but picked off Juan Francia and struck out Garrett Guzman. The submariner also put a man on in the 7th and with Walker at third and two outs, intentionally walked Brian Burgamy second in the league in RBI to get to Olivares who grounded out to end the frame.
Somerset (23-23, 59-57) and Camden (16-29, 55-60) play game three on Wednesday night. Josh Miller (10-8, 3.73) takes Derell McCall (7-6, 5.45) with coverage beginning at 7:00 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and online at www.wctcam.com and www.somersetpatriots.com
