(Bridgeport, C.T., Aug. 25, 2010) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears 4-3 on Wednesday night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Newark got on the scoreboard first for the third straight game. Tim Raines Jr. doubled to start the night and came home three batters later on a Carl Everett RBI single to make it 1-0 Bears. Adam Greenberg drew a leadoff walk for Bridgeport, stole second and moved to third on an error. Steve Moss put a single up the middle to plate Greenberg at knot the game at 1-1. The Bears came right back against starter Luis Gonzalez in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Raines Jr. put a RBI single into left field to bring in Sandy Madera to give Newark a one-run advantage.
Bob Zimmermann kept the Bears' lead intact as he retired eleven straight batters after the Moss single and recorded seven of his 10 strikeouts over the same span. Gonzalez was as strong, stranding five base runners over his next five frames, scattering just three hits, and setting down eight straight at one point.
Bridgeport tied the game in the fifth as Danny Putnam, who ripped a triple to start the inning, came home on a Joe Jiannetti sacrifice fly and it was 2-2. The 'Fish took their only lead in the seventh staging a two-out rally. Former Bear Tom Pennino reached on a two-out fielder's choice followed by a Brandon Chaves' RBI double and a Greenberg RBI triple to give Bridgeport a two-run lead. Newark tried to rally in the ninth against Jorge Julio as Raines Jr., who finished 3-for-5, tripled for the second-straight game and came home on a Kennard Jones RBI. Everett doubled into right and was pinch-run for by Matt Smith, who moved to third on a wild pitch. Julio, though got Brian Barton to strikeout and recorded his 23rd save on the season.
Gonzalez (6-3) earned the win, firing seven innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, with 10 strikeouts. Zimmermann (1-4) suffered the loss, surrendering three earned runs on six hits, with 10 strikeouts over seven innings of work.
The Bears and Bluefish close out the series on Thursday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
