Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Blue Crabs entered Wednesday night's contest against the Lancaster Barnstormers needing a victory if they were to avoid losing their first series since May 28-30 at Long Island. Instead, Southern Maryland dropped a 5-1 decision to Lancaster at Regency Furniture Stadium and have now lost three in a row at home. It is also the first home series they've lost since May 14-16 when the Somerset Patriots took two of three.

The Crabs drew first blood when rightfielder Ben Harrison led off the third with a single, advanced to second on ground out, and then scored on leftfielder Shaun Cumberland's RBI ground rule double over the left-centerfield wall.

RHP Joe Newby (6-4) was outstanding early on, striking out six in just three innings. He held the Barnstormers scoreless through four, but suffered the loss. Lancaster took the lead in the fifth on a two run homer by catcher and former Blue Crab Octavio Martinez that scored first baseman Adam Witter, who began the inning with a double. It was Martinez's third dinger of the season, and second at Regency Furniture Stadium as a member of the Barnstormers.

Despite entering the game tied for the league lead in losses, RHP Jose Sanchez (5-11) struck out six in as many innings of work to earn the win. The Blue Crabs loaded the bases in the fourth, but Sanchez went on to strike out the side. Southern Maryland had runners on base in every inning except the first. The Barnstormers padded their lead in the eighth when Witter knocked a three run homer into left-center, his 13th of the season. Shortstop Bryant Nelson and designated hitter Ryan Mulhern both scored. Witter ended his night 3-for-3 with a walk.

LHP Tim Hamulack pitched the ninth for Lancaster to finish the game.

At 69-45, the Blue Crabs maintain the best overall record in the Atlantic League, and are 28-16 in the second half.

The Blue Crabs will be back in action Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, in the finale of a four-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers, wrapping up a seven-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
