Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 25, 2010) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears 4-3 Wednesday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead over the Bluefish in the top of the first inning. Tim Raines Jr. led the game off with a double to left center, and moved to third on a groundout. A base hit up the middle off the bat of Carl Everett brought Raines Jr. home, marking the first run of the game.
Newark did not stay in front for long, as Bridgeport came back with a run in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game. A walk, a stolen base, and an error put Adam Greenberg on third base for Steve Moss, who hit a one-out single through the left side to score Greenberg.
A battle for the lead erupted in the second as the Bears worked their way back for a 2-1 lead. The inning began with back-to-back walks for Sandy Madera and Isaiah Kaaihue, and Randy Gress singled to load the bases for Newark. Raines Jr. continued to give the Bluefish trouble with a base hit to left, plating Madera to take back control of the game.
Bridgeport continued to play keep up with the Bears, tying the game at two in the fifth. Danny Putnam drove a leadoff triple down the right field line and tagged up on a sacrifice fly hit by Joe Jiannetti.
The 'Fish jumped ahead of the Bears 4-2 in the seventh, taking control of the game for the first time on the night. Joe Jiannetti started the rally with a double, and Tom Pennino reached on a fielder's choice. With two away Brandon Chaves drove the ball to deep center field to bring home Pennino, the go-ahead run. Greenberg padded Bridgeport's lead with a triple to center, allowing Chaves to cross the plate.
Luis Gonzalez (6-3) stayed in the game long enough to earn the win, giving up two runs on seven hits. The lefty walked five and struck out ten over seven innings of work. Jorge Julio picked up his 23rd save of the season, while giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout through the ninth inning.
Greenberg's three-bagger tied the current record for triples hit during a career with the Bluefish, held at 16 by former player Angel Espada.
The loss was given to Newark's Bob Zimmerman (8-5), surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits, with two strikeouts and one walk through seven innings.
