Shark Snap Shot:

The Worcester Sharks (11-12-2-0, 24pts) chomped two out of a possible six points in their first 3-in-3 weekend of the season last week. Worcester began the weekend with a 5-3 loss in Hartford on Friday and then dropped a 2-1 decision to the Monarchs at home on Saturday. The Sharks wrapped up the weekend with a 1-0 victory over the Pirates at the DCU Center on Sunday.

Worcester sits in 5th place in the Atlantic Division with 24 points (11-12-2-0) and 14th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks are just five points behind the Albany Devils for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East (Sharks have one game in hand).

Highlights from the week include the first professional shutout by JP Anderson (26 saves) in the 1-0 win over the Pirates on Sunday. Micheal Haley scored his team 8th and 9th goals of the season and picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute in three games last week. Daniil Tarasov extended his point streak to five games (3-2-5) with his 6th goal of the season in Hartford on Friday while Nick Jones picked up his first AHL point (assist) on Saturday vs. Manchester. Konrad Abeltshauser picked up his first professional fighting major vs. Andy Andreoff on Saturday and Adam Burish scored his first goal as a member of the Worcester Sharks in Hartford on Friday.

Matt Tennyson and Chris Tierney were both recalled by the San Jose Sharks on Dec 10 while goaltender Aaron Dell was loaned to Allen (ECHL) to Dec 10 as well. Troy Grosenick returned from San Jose to Worcester on Dec 9 and went 0-2-0 in two starts last week for Worcester. Melker Karlsson is still on recall with the SJ Sharks and has one point (assist) in three games for San Jose with a +2 rating.

The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is forward Micheal Haley. The 26-year-old from Guelph, Ontario recorded two points (2-0-2) and fired six shots on goal in three games last week to lead the way offensively for the Sharks. Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute vs. the Monarchs on Saturday and currently leads the Sharks with nine goals and 60 penalty minutes.

COMING UP:

The Worcester Sharks will hit the road for three games this weekend before the AHL holiday break.

The Sharks head to Manchester on Friday for a 7pm battle vs. the Monarchs followed by a Saturday night tilt at 7pm in Portland vs. the Pirates. Worcester wraps up the busy weekend with a 3pm start in Bridgeport on Sunday.

MILESTONE ALERT:

Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1293 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,629 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy needs 2 more wins to tie John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history.

Equipment Manager Chris Davidson-Adams will be behind the bench for his 1,000th game as a professional hockey equipment manager on Sunday, Dec 21 in Bridgeport. "Critter" has been an equipment manager for Dallas (NHL), San Jose (NHL), Muskegon (UHL), Grand Rapids (AHL), and Houston (IHL). Chris is in his 5th season as the head equipment manager of the Worcester Sharks.

- Defenseman Dylan Demelo suited up in his 100th game for the Sharks on Nov 29th. Demelo has 33 points (3-30-33) for Worcester in 106 games for the Sharks.

- Matt Taormina leads all Worcester d-men with 13 points (3-10-13) in 25 games.

The Worcester Sharks (10-11-2-0, 22pts) fell under .500 for the first time this season after a 5-3 loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack (14-9-2-1, 31pts) in front of 3,516 fans at the XL Center on Friday evening. Worcester scored three goals in the second period (Tarasov, Burish, and Haley) as the two teams headed into the second intermission tied 3-3. Ryan Haggerty and Oscar Lindberg scored third period goals for Hartford while Jeff Malcolm made 35 saves in net for the win. Troy Grosenick made 23 saves for Worcester in his return from the NHL in the loss as the Sharks lost for the 10th time in their last 11 tries in Hartford.

12.13.14 - Manchester 2- Worcester 1 - L - DCU Center - Worcester, MA

The Worcester Sharks (10-12-2-0, 22pts) wearing Worcester IceCats jerseys suffered a 2-1 loss to the red hot Manchester Monarchs (17-5-1-1, 36pts) in front of 4,116 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday evening. Freddie Hamilton scored the only goal for the Sharks while Troy Grosenick was solid with 27 saves in net in the loss. David Van der Gulik and Andrew Bodnarchuk scored for Manchester and JF Berube had to make just 14 saves in net as the Monarchs won their 4th straight game. Worcester was outshot 29-15 and the Sharks went 0-for-9 on the power play as Team Teal dropped their third straight game.

12.14.14 - Portland 0 - Worcester 1 - W - DCU Center - Worcester, MA

The Worcester Sharks (11-12-2-0, 24pts) closed out their first 3-in-3 weekend of the season with a 1-0 win over the visiting Portland Pirates (14-13-0-0, 28pts) in front of 3,028 fans at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon. JP Anderson made 26 saves for his first professional shutout while Micheal Haley's team leading 9th goal of the season early in the second period stood tall as the Sharks broke a three game losing skid. Mike McKenna made 33 saves for Portland as the Pirates lost their 4th straight game.

The Worcester Sharks (11-12-2-0, 24pts in 25gp) are in 5th place in the Atlantic Division; which is 12 points behind the 1st place Monarchs (36pts in 25gp), six points behind the 2nd place Bruins (30pts in 27gp), four points behind the 3rd place Pirates (28pts in 27gp), and four points behind the 4th place IceCaps (28pts in 30gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*Quick Strikes (thanks Ballou)... On Oct 29 vs the Pirates, the first-period goals by Matt Tennyson and Micheal Haley, one at 16:37 and the next at 16:53, were four seconds shy of the team record. Garrett Stafford and Tomas Plihal scored 12 seconds apart in the second period on Feb 2, 2007 against Bridgeport at the DCU Center. *Breaking down the roster.... The Sharks opening roster featured 11 Americans, nine Canadians, two Swedes, one German, and one Russian.

*Oh boy...Troy in the Shootout!.... goaltender Troy Grosenick went 6-0 last season in the shootout - tied for most shootout wins in the AHL.... Troy stopped 25 of 28 shootout attempts (.892%) and was the only goalie to have at least six wins in the shootout without a shootout loss!

*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship.... Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013....Travis Oleksuk with University Minnesota Duluth in 2011...Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.... and Adam Burish with Wisconsin in 2006.

*Memorial Cup... rookie defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser won the Memorial Cup in 2013 with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) and was named to the 2013 Memorial Cup All-Star Team.

*First Pro Goals this season... Ryan Carpenter scored his 1st pro goal (Andrew Hammond) in 3-2OTW at Binghamton on Oct 11...Chris Tierney scored his 1st (Malcolm Subban) in 4-2W vs. Providence on Nov 8.

*Sharks in the Atlantic... went 21-22-1-2 vs. the Atlantic in 2013-14 and are 7-6-0-0 in divisional play this season.

*Keeping your hat on (Thanks Ballou)... Worcester had gone 263 games without one of its players recording a hat trick before Daniil Tarasov scored three goals in Springfield on Oct 26. That was easily the longest active streak in the AHL. The Sharks' last hat trick had belonged to Dan DaSilva, who scored three times in Manchester during a 5-2 Worcester victory in Manchester on Feb. 14, 2010. Freddie Hamilton scored the first home hat trick in 206 games with three goals in a 5:12 span in the third period in a 4-1 win over the Pirates on Oct 26, 2014. It was the first home hat trick since P.J. Fenton had one on Feb. 28, 2009 in the Sharks' 7-3 victory over Springfield. In all, Worcester players have recorded hat tricks only ten times in the franchise's 653 games. The Sharks are 10-0 in those games and 1-15-3 in the 19 games in which the opposition has had a hat trick.

* Brothers... Freddie Hamilton is the older brother of Dougie Hamilton, who currently plays with the Boston Bruins.... Rylan Schwartz is the younger brother of Jayden Schwartz, who currently plays for the St. Louis Blues.

*Major Bonneau... Worcester Sharks tough guy Jimmy Bonneau has racked up 53 fighting majors in 136 games for the Worcester Sharks. Bonneau has set the Worcester Sharks record for most fighting majors in a season in 2011-12 with 22, surpassing Frazer McLaren (21 in 2008-09). Jimmy has 125 fighting majors in 331 AHL games along with 932 penalty minutes.

*Five for fighting... Worcester celebrates 20 years of AHL hockey!

The 2014-15 season marks the 20th season of AHL action at the DCU Center in the city of Worcester. Over 3.8 million fans have attended either an IceCats (11 seasons) or Sharks (9th season) game in downtown Worcester since 1994.
