Sharks Drop 2-1 Decision to Falcons

Springfield, MA- The Worcester Sharks (28-25-1-6, 63pts) were defeated by their Eastern Conference rival the Springfield Falcons (36-18-5-4, 81pts) by a score of 2-1 on Friday night in front of 4,396 fans at the Mass Mutual Center. The Sharks return home to host the Providence Bruins on Saturday at 7pm on Heroes Night.

Goaltender Curtis McElhinney came up huge for the Falcons making 25 saves in his 25th win. Nick Holden's second period goal at 16:24 was the game winner as the Falcons held off a late third period rally by Worcester. Adam Comrie scored Worcester's only goal of the night in the third period to make things interesting but the Sharks were unable to send the game into overtime. Harri Sateri made 19 saves for the Sharks in the loss.

Sean Collins (8th) put the Falcons on top 13 seconds into the game as he found the back of the net after a centering feed from Spencer Machacek. Worcester players gave up on the play after an icing call was waved off by the officials late. Each team went 0-1 on the power play as the Sharks outshot the Falcons 12 to 10 in the first period.

Nick Holden (6th) added to the Falcons lead in the second period with a blast from the point past Sateri on a power play to put the Falcons up 2-0 at 16:24. The second period was full of penalties for both teams, as Matt Pelech picked up his team leading 14th fighting major with a long scrap with Dalton Smith (12th FM) at 13:01. The Sharks trailed 2-0 heading into the third period of play.

Defenseman Adam Comrie (2nd) scored for the Sharks with 9:03 in the third to bring Worcester within one entering the final stretch of the game. Sateri was pulled for the man advantage late in the third but the Sharks were unable to find the equalizer. It was a close game up until the final whistle but the Sharks were unable to find the back of the net in crunch time.

The Sharks overall record falls to 28-26-1-6 (63pts in 60gp) and 16-14-0-2 on the road. Worcester has 16 games remaining and is currently six points behind the final playoff spot with three games in hand.
