Worcester Sharks News Release

A Quick Look Back

2.2.07 - Worcester 6 - Bridgeport 2

The Sharks earned a big 6-2 win at home over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before hitting the road for eight games. Eleven Sharks players factored into the scoring, with Grant Stevenson and Tom Cavanagh each contributing three points. Netminder Dimitri Patzold turned aside 27 shots for his fifth consecutive win.

2.3.07 - Worcester 4 - Albany 3

Thomas Greiss turned aside 38 Albany shots-on-goal helping the Sharks to a 4-3 win in their only visit to Upstate NY this year. Four different skaters scored for the Sharks, including Patrick Traverse who scored the game-winning goal in the final period of play.

Comeback Kids...

The Worcester Sharks scored four unanswered goals to come-from-behind and beat the Albany River Rats 4-3 on Saturday evening. Albany scored two goals in the first and one in the early part of the second period before Worcester came

storming back to take home two points for the Atlantic Division standings. Patrick Traverse slammed home a 55-foot slap shot from the point for the game-winner 11 minutes into the final frame. Rookie netminder Thomas Greiss was phenomenal between the pipes with 38 saves.

Shorthanded Success...

The Sharks scored three shorthanded goals this weekend. The first two came on Friday night against the Sound Tigers with less than a minute left in regulation. Forward Grant Stevenson, fresh off the injured list, scored his seventh goal of the season in an empty net while killing off a Lukas Kaspar roughing penalty. Just 48 seconds later, Justin Kurtz joined defenseman Garrett Stafford in an odd-man rush and beat Bridgeport goalie Wade Dubielewicz high to the glove hand. The third and final shorthanded goal came on Saturday against Albany when Kaspar set up Josh Prudden with a beautiful pass and an easy tap-in goal. Worcester now has 10 shorthanded goals on the season.

On the Plus Side of Things...

Brennan Evans has been a quiet force for the Worcester Sharks this season. The steady defenseman has been the most consistent for the Sharks with a plus-14 rating in 44 games played. Evans leads all Sharks players in that category and ranks No. 26 in the league. In his last two games, he has three assists and a plus-four rating. Those three points add to Evans' season totals of nine points (1+8=9). The Alberta native has also racked up 109 penalty minutes.

Passion Plunge...

On Saturday, February 3rd, the first annual Worcester Passion Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics took place at Indian Lake. To the uneducated person, jumping into a frozen lake with 35 degree water would be down right crazy. But the Plungers who braved the frigid temperatures of the lake water, jumped because they care about something Special, very special. This year, the Worcester Sharks have partnered up with the Special Olympics and will hold the Opening Ceremonies prior to their March 2nd tilt against the Providence Bruins at the DCU Center. Of the caring people who were brave enough to jump in the bitter cold water were Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, City Manager Michael O'Brien, and City Councilor Rick Rushton.
