Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC â The South Atlantic League leader board is currently swarmed with members of the Charleston RiverDogs, led by closer Mike Martinez and first baseman Ben Jones.
Martinez leads the SAL and all of Minor League Baseball with eight saves. The Yankees' 8th-round choice in the 2004 draft is yet to blow a save this season and finished first for the month of April in the Rolaids Relief Man Standings for Minor League Baseball. Martinez has also won his only decision this season and leads the SAL with 11 appearances.
Ben Jones is another RiverDog who excelled in April. The first baseman currently leads the league in hitting with a .368 average and is fourth in RBI with 20. His fellow slugger in the order, Cody Ehlers, is third in the SAL with 22 RBI and third in on-base percentage at .464.
The top two hitters in the order have been setting the table for those sluggers, as Tim Battle and Justin Christian are among the top five in runs scored and stolen bases. Battle is fourth in steals with 13 and third in runs scored with 20, while Christian is tied for fifth in stolen bases with 12 and first in all of Minor League Baseball with 27 runs scored. Battle is also tied for first with three triples and second with 12 extra base hits in the SAL.
Besides Martinez, Philip Hughes has also been dominant on the mound. The first round pick in 2004 is fourth in the league with a 1.07 ERA and has not surrendered a run and struck out 16 in his last two starts (11 innings). He did not allow a hit or a run in his last start against Rome on May 1.
The RiverDogs play the third game of a four game series at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday night. The gates open at 6 pm with the first pitch at 7:05. Tickets for the remaining two games of the series are available by visiting the RiverDogs website at www.riverdogs.com or by calling the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
