RHP Blake Johnson's Two-Hit Shutout Gives Catfish Doubleheader Split

SAVANNAH, GA— The Columbus Catfish received their best pitching performance of the season when RHP Blake Johnson tossed a two-hit shutout to give the Catfish a 2-0 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader in Savannah. The win helped the Catfish earn a doubleheader split after the Catfish fell in the opener 4-3 in 10 innings. Johnson struck out five and allowed just two hits in the win, his first in a Catfish uniform. The Catfish lost the opener 4-3 in 10 innings when Savannah DH Luke Montz hit a walk-off HR in the 10th. With the win in the nightcap , the Catfish are now 8-17 in 2005.

The Catfish fell behind the Savannah Sand Gnats in Game 1 1-0 on a sacrifice fly by CF Rogearvin Bernadina in the first. Catfish RHP Javy Guerra would settle down, scattering seven hits in five innings against the Sand Gnats. With two runners on base in the fourth, Columbus DH James Peterson hit his second HR of the season, a three-run shot over the left field wall to give the Fish a 3-1 advantage. The Sand Gnats rallied in the sixth to tie the game at three. The game remained 3-3 into the 10th inning, when Savannah DH Luke Montz hit RHP Phil Sobkow's second pitch of the inning into the left field bleachers for a walk-off HR.

Game 2 remained scoreless through five innings but singles by Catfish 2B Travis Denker and Peterson put runners at first and third with nobody out against Savannah starter RHP Steven Cook. SS Lucas May's sacrifice fly made it 1-0. C Gabriel Gutierrrez added an insurance run in the 7th when he hit his first professional HR into the left field bleachers. Johnson retired the final five batters of the night for his first professional complete game and shutout.

Tomorrow the Catfish and Sand Gnats wrap up a five-game series with a 6:35 first pitch at Grayson Stadium . RHP Landestoy Troncoso (1-3, 10.05 ERA) starts for the Catfish. The Fish return home for an eight-game series at Golden Park at 6:00 PM on Wednesday against the Augusta Greenjackets.
