Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 16, 2011) -The Long Island Ducks defeated the Road Warriors 5-4 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game set at Bethpage Ballpark.
The Road Warriors struck first when Adrian Ortiz scored on a passed ball in the opening inning against Ducks' starter Dave Williams. The Ducks responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead on Freddie Thon's two-run double.
Long Island pushed two more runs across in the third on RBI doubles by J.R. House and Matt Esquivel to extend the lead to three. Both teams exchanged zeroes until the seventh when the Road Warriors stormed back to cut the deficit to one. Run-scoring singles by Danny Gonzalez and Joe Jiannetti did the damage, but a great throw by Kraig Binick from center nailed the tying run trying to score. The Ducks got a run back on Javier Colina's sac fly to right in the seventh.
Gonzalez connected for a two-out RBI double in the ninth to bring the Road Warriors back within one, but Ehren Wassermann struck out Michael Mooney to end the game. Williams (1-1) earned the win, tossing five innings, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out five. Massetti (7-11) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over six and one-third innings. Wassermann nailed down his 10th save of the season in the ninth.
Matt Esquivel led the Flock with three hits while Freddie Thon led the way with two RBI.
