Revs Tripped Up Early In Loss At Lancaster

August 16, 2011 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution fell into a giant hole early on, dropping the opening game of a three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-4 in front of 4,294 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster on Tuesday evening. The Revs fall into a virtual tie for first place in the Freedom Division's second half with the Barnstormers, and now must win the next two contests to retain the Community Cup as the 2011 "War of the Roses" series winds down.

The Barnstormers leapt in front to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings, more than enough for Lancaster starter John Halama who went the distance.

Lancaster's first three batters all recorded hits and scored in the first inning. Gilberto Mejia led off with a single up the middle, stole second, and scored on an RBI double to right by Wayne Lydon. Lydon proceeded to steal third and came home on a double to right-center by Tommy Everidge. Everidge then scored with one out on a wild pitch.

Lancaster enjoyed an even bigger inning in the second scoring five times in the inning. Lydon pushed the first run home on a bases loaded walk, and Everidge followed with a two-run bloop single to shallow left. Travis Metcalf made it an early laugher with a two-run double to right-center.

York finally got on the board in the fifth when Eric Eymann lifted a sacrifice fly to center, and the Revs made their way back into the contest with three runs in the sixth. After a double by Ramon Castro and a single from Chris Nowak set the table, James Shanks blooped an RBI double to right, Bryant Nelson drove in a run on a groundout to short, and Vince Harrison brought the Revs within 8-4 on an RBI infield single. Halama went on to retire 10 of the final 11 that he faced, however, and the Revs pulled no closer.

The York bullpen allowed just one run in 6.2 innings of work. That run came on an RBI single by Metcalf with one out in the seventh for the game's final score.

Halama (5-4) tossed his third complete game of the season, and his second complete game victory against York. Three of his five wins have come at York's expense.

Revs starter Shaun Garceau (3-6) suffered the loss, charged with eight runs (seven earned) in 1.1 innings. Entering the night, the right-hander held a 1.70 ERA since June 30.

Everidge and Metcalf each drove in three for Lancaster.

Harrison led the Revs' offense going 3-for-4 in the loss.

Notes: Lancaster now leads the "War of the Roses" series 9-7, needing to win just one of the final two games to claim the Community Cup. The Revs are now 3-3 on their seven-game road stretch that concludes on Wednesday. It was just the third time in the last 19 games that a Revs starting pitcher had allowed more than three earned runs (entered with a 2.63 ERA over the previous 18 contests). It was just the third time in the last 19 games that the team allowed more than five earned runs. York's Corey Thurman (9-3, 3.33) will face Lancaster's Matt Wright (4-8, 4.27) in Wednesday's game at 7:00 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium before the series shifts to York on Thursday. Fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, Shoutcast.com (WPDC), and YorkRevsTV.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
