Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - Blue Crabs pitchers stifled Somerset Patriot hitters to the tune of five hits as Southern Maryland defeated Somerset 3-0 on Tuesday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ.
Southern Maryland jumped out in front in the fourth inning as an RBI single from first baseman Casey Benjamin scored designated hitter Brian Barton from second and gave the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead. Barton would drive in his own run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single, which scored catcher Christian Lopez from third to boost Southern Maryland's lead to two.
The Blue Crabs added another run in the eighth as Barton led off with a triple, then scored on a double from third baseman Travis Garcia. For the game, Barton went 2-4 with a triple, two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
But the game was all about the Blue Crabs pitching as Southern Maryland used four pitchers to hold the Patriots in check. Starter Nick Green (7-5) led the way by going six shutout innings. He allowed all five hits and walked two while striking out two others in getting the win. Relievers Jason Waddell, Steve Palazzolo, and closer Jim Ed Warden each pitched scoreless innings to end the game. The save for Warden was his league-leading 23rd of the season.
In addition to Barton, the Blue Crabs got two doubles from shortstop Tanner Townsend and a double and single, along with an RBI, from Garcia.
Somerset was led offensively by designated hitter Josh Pressley who had two singles in four at-bats. Taking the loss for Somerset was reliever Luke Sommer (1-4), who came into the game for starter Bill Pulsipher after the second inning, and allowed two runs on six hits in four frames. He also walked one and struck out four.
The Blue Crabs take on the Patriots in game two of their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send right-hander Virgil Vasquez (7-6, 4.43 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Jim Magrane (1-1, 7.63 ERA) for the Patriots. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
