Seven Run Sixth Does in Saints in 11-4 Loss

WICHITA, KS - The fortunes of the St. Paul Saints turned in three batters and it probably could have been avoided. After scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, the Wichita Wingnuts score seven in the bottom of the inning as the Saints lost 11-4 on Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

With the Saints trailing 4-1 in the top of the sixth Craig Brazell led off the inning with a double to center. Ole Sheldon moved Brazell to third with a single to right. Brandon Tripp doubled to right scoring Brazell to make it 4-2 and Jose Hernandez followed that with an RBI infield single scoring Sheldon to make it 4-3. The Saints chased Wingnuts starter Justin Klipp for reliever Josh Stone. After Stone struck out Jordan Tripp, Dwight Childs hit a sacrifice fly to center tying the game at four.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, it all came apart for the Saints. Abel Nieves led off with an infield single that took a high hop off the field turf over the head of Joey Becker at third. Adam Frost played the ball at shortstop on the backhand, but his throw to first was too late. Roemer then hit Mike Mobbs on a 1-2 pitch. David Amberson laid down a sacrifice bunt on the first base side that neither Roemer nor catcher Childs picked up, then they let it roll hoping it would go foul, but it stayed fair, loading the bases with nobody out. Jared McDonald doubled home two to make it 6-4. Ryan Khoury followed that up with a two-run double to make it 8-4. Jake Kahaulelio's RBI infield single made it 9-4 and chased Roemer for reliever Dustin Klabunde. He gave up a double to John Rodriguez that put runners at second and third as the first seven hitters of the inning collected a hit. The first out was finally recorded on a sacrifice fly from CJ Ziegler. With two outs Nieves doubled home the final run of the inning as the Saints allowed a season high seven runs. Roemer went 5.0 innings allowing 10 runs on 11 hits, while walking one and striking out three. The Saints record for most runs and earned run in a game by a pitcher is 11.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Sunday afternoon at 3:16 p.m. The Saints send RHP Luke Anderson (1-1, 5.87) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Junior Guerra (2-0, 4.07). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
