Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (18-10) defeated the St. Paul Saints (15-13) 11-4 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.

The Wingnuts used a seven-run bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and take control of the game. Abel Nieves reached on an infield single leading off and advanced to second when Mike Mobbs was hit by a pitch. After David Amberson's bunt single loaded the bases with no outs, Jared McDonald struck a two-run, ground rule double to right-center field that scored Nieves and Mobbs. Ryan Khoury followed with a two-run double down the left field line that made it 8-4 in favor of Wichita.

With Khoury on second and still no outs, Jake Kahaulelio hit an infield single that deflected into right field and allowed Khoury to score Wichita's ninth run of the game. John Rodriguez chased Kahaulelio to third with a double off the left-center field fence. Kahaulelio scored on C.J. Ziegler's sacrifice fly to left. Two batters later, Nieves collected his second hit of the inning when he doubled down the right field line to drive in Rodriguez.

Rookie right-hander Josh Stone earned the win in relief with two shutout innings in his professional debut.

Lincoln Holzkom and Josh Dew each threw a perfect inning of relief to close out the final two innings.

Wichita grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first. Kahaulelio singled to right and made a key slide to break up a potential inning-ending double play on Rodriguez's groundball to Saints' starter Wes Roemer. Ziegler flared a single to shallow right to put runners on the corners with two outs. Cole Armstrong crushed the next pitch over the right-center field wall for a three-run homer.

Mobbs led off the bottom of the second with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Amberson.

Amberson doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.

St. Paul scratched out a run in the top of the fifth to get on the scoreboard. Dwight Childs led off with a double and scored on back-to-back groundouts from Dan Kaczrowski and Adam Frost.

The Saints tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth. Craig Brazell led off with a double and went to third on Ole Sheldon's single to right. The Saints cut the lead to 4-3 on a Brandon Tripp double to right and a Jose Hernandez infield single. Stone relieved Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp. Stone allowed a game-tying sacrifice fly to Childs, but retired all three batters to face him in the inning to prevent St. Paul from taking the lead.

Klipp took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five-plus innings. Klipp walked one and struck out four.

Roemer took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits in five-plus frames. Roemer walked one and struck out three.

All nine of Wichita's starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Kahaulelio, Ziegler, Armstrong, Nieves, and Amberson all had multi-hit games.
