Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Sox score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to overtake the Canaries, 5-4 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. With 2,626 in attendance, the Saturday evening affair lasted two hours and thirty two minutes. Both teams would use five different pitchers in a back and forth battle.

Amarillo scored first when David Peralta drove in Chris Valencia with a single to right. Canary starter, Mitchell Clegg would settle down until Peralta came up again in the fourth inning with a solo homerun to right center to make it 2-0. Joe Newby started for the Sox and would face a bases loaded jam in the third but got out of it with two strikeouts and a groundout.

Sioux Falls took the lead in the fifth after Bate Baumann was walked to start the inning. The top of the Canaries' order all singled to contribute to the three-run top of the fifth. Newby would go continue into the seventh for the Sox but got pulled after allowing consecutive hits again to the first two in the lineup. Joe Testa came in relief and allowed an RBI single to his first batter faced, J.P. Ramirez. The Canaries led 4-2 after seven innings played.

Kyle Vazquez was the first reliever for Sioux Falls and he put the Sox down in order in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth, the Canaries used three different relievers starting with Matt Daly. Daly walked the first two batters, allowed a bunt single to load the bases, and then after a controversial double play groundout, was replaced by Jack Van Leur. Leur would only throw two pitches, the second being the game-tying single off the bat of Peralta. Kirk Clark then came in to face Joe Weik who gave the Sox their 5-4 lead with a double over the right fielder's head.

The ninth featured a walk issued by Josh Giles, who was immediately pulled and replaced by Erik Draxton who also walked his first batter. With two on, a hard bunt back to the pitcher allowed the Sox to put out the lead runner. A groundout to the first basemen put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Draxton struck out Jared Clark on three pitches to end the game with the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

John Holdzkom (W, 2-1) pitched the eighth, retiring the side in order with a strikeout. Jack Van Leur (L, 0-1) recorded no outs in his one earned run given up. Erik Draxton (S, 4) got all three outs in the ninth with a walk and a strikeout. Joe Newby went six and a third, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking three.
