New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs used a seven-run outburst in the third inning, led by a Matt Dominguez three-run homer, to defeat the Iowa Cubs, 7-3 on Wednesday night at Zephyr Field.

After waiting out a 1 hour, 13 minute delay, New Orleans was down one run in the third when Brad Davis led off the inning with a line drive homer off the left field foul poll to tie the game.

Starting pitcher Chris Sampson doubled down the left field line, and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Mike Cervenak, who hit a two-run single to left-center to give the Z's a 3-1 lead.

Dominguez then belted a towering blast over the left-center field wall, putting the Zephyrs ahead 6-1. Davis came up for the second time in the inning with two out, and delivered an RBI single to cap the seven-run frame.

Sampson (7-0) pitched six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out two in becoming the second Zephyr to start a season 7-0, joining reliever Ron Rightnowar, won his first seven decisions in 1994.

Bryan LaHair belted his league-leading 29th home run in the sixth inning for Iowa, who added another run in the seventh on a DJ LeMahieu RBI single, but that would be all as the Zephyrs bullpen combined to pitch three innings to secure the victory.

Dave Bush (0-2) took the loss for the Cubs, pitching five innings, surrendering seven runs on eight hits.

The Z's have won five of six meetings with the I-Cubs at Zephyr Field this season.

The Zephyrs return to action Thursday night for game three of the four-game set against Iowa. Chris Volstad makes his 2011 Zephyr debut as he takes on Iowa's Alberto Cabrera (1-3).
