
Seven-Run Inning Beats Cubs

Metairie, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs (51-54) scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and beat the Iowa Cubs (46-59) 7-3 at Zephyr Field tonight. The game was delayed an hour and 13 minutes by rain before the action started. This series is tied 1-1, but the Zephyrs lead the season series 9-5.
Cubs' starter Dave Bush (0-2) didn't allow a hit through the first two innings before the Zephyrs broke out in the third. Brad Davis led off the inning with a home run. The Zephyrs loaded the bases with one out when Mike Cervenak added to the lead with a two-run single. Matt Dominguez followed with a three-run homer that broke the game open. With two outs, Jesus Merchan doubled and scored on a base hit by Davis to complete the rally. Bush worked through five innings, walked two, and struck out two.
Zephyrs' starter Chris Sampson (7-0) allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings for the win. The Cubs got on the board first on back-to-back doubles by Brad Snyder and Chris Robinson in the second inning. The Cubs didn't score again until Bryan LaHair led off the top of the sixth with his league-leading 29th home run of the season.
Corey Madden pitched the seventh inning and allowed the Cubs' final run on an RBI single by D.J. LeMahieu. Dan Jennings and Cesar Valdez each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Zephyrs.
Robert Coello pitched two scoreless innings and Chris Carpenter pitched a scoreless eighth to finish the game on the mound for the Zephyrs.
The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Zephyr Field. LH Chris Rusin (1-0, 4.26) will start for the Cubs against RH Chris Volstad for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40 p.m.
