Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers suffered a 6-4 series-opening loss to the Sacramento River Cats in front of 4,495 fans at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday night.

A big inning from Sacramento gave the River Cats an early 4-0 lead. Outfielder Michael Taylor led off the frame with his 12th home run of the season. Jai Miller drove in one more run with a line drive single with two outs and catcher Josh Donaldson rounded things out with a bases-clearing two-run double in the next at-bat.

Catcher Anthony Recker stretched Sacramento's lead to 6-0 after belting a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning.

Tacoma, after being held scoreless over the first eight innings, attempted a rally with four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Jose Yepez drove in the first run on an RBI-single and Michael Saunders scored one more off a ground out hit by pinch hitter Matt Mangini one batter later.

An error committed by catcher Anthony Recker on a pop up cleared the way for two more runs with two outs, but Carlos Peguero grounded out in Tacoma's next at-bat to send the Rainiers to a fourth consecutive loss.

Sacramento's Josh Outman (7-1) picked up the win, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts over 5.0 scoreless innings. Starter Luke French (7-7) ended his streak of quality starts at four, surrendering six runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in the losing effort.

The Rainiers (51-53) look to end their losing skid when they take on the River Cats at 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday. Left-hander Anthony Vasquez is slated to start for Tacoma (2-2, 3.62) against Sacramento right-hander Travis Banwart (5-6, 5.24). The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and can be streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
