Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports fell victim to the San Jose Giants' biggest inning of the season on Tuesday night. San Jose plated seven runs in the fourth inning on its way to an 11-2 win over the Ports to kick off a three-game series at Municipal Stadium.
San Jose started the scoring in the second as they loaded the bases with nobody out on three singles to start the frame. Jonah Arenado drove in the first run of the game with a fielder's choice groundout and, two batters later, Johneshwy Fargas added a two-out single to make it a 2-0 Giants lead.
Stockton's lone highlight on the night came in the form of a game-tying two-run homer in the fourth inning from Tyler Marincov, his fifth home run of the season to knot the score at 2-2. Those were the only runs allowed by Giants starter Mark Reyes (1-0), who picked up his first California League win after going seven innings and allowing five hits while striking out four.
The Giants came back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a haymaker. With one out, Arenado and Brandon Bednar hit back-to-back singles that put runners at the corners. Fargas followed with a squeeze bunt to the right side of the infield on which Arenado scored to make it 3-2. Ronnie Jebavy came up next and hit a two-run double to right. With two outs, Chris Shaw drew a walk and Aramis Garcia lined an RBI single to left to make it 6-2. Duggar followed with a two-run double to left that made it an 8-2 contest and knocked Ports starter Heath Fillmyer (2-1) from the game. Matt Stalcup came on in relief and yielded an RBI single to Jose Vizcaino, Jr. that ran the San Jose lead to 9-2.
Fillmyer suffered his first loss of the season, going 3.2 innings and allowing a career-high nine runs on nine hits.
San Jose added a pair of runs in the seventh. With two outs and the bases empty, Ports reliever Koby Gauna gave up a double to Shaw and an ensuing RBI single to Garcia. The Giants added a run later in the inning on a fielding error committed by third baseman Melvin Mercedes, one of two errors committed by Mercedes on the night and one of a season-high four errors committed by the team.
Dusten Knight came on in relief of Reyes to pitch the final two innings for the Giants. Knight punctuated the Giants win by striking out the side in order in the ninth.
James Harris, who went 0-for-4 on the night, saw his hit streak come to an end at 17 games.
The Ports and Giants play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium. Casey Meisner (0-1, 4.80 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Jason Forjet (1-1, 6.75 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PDT.
