Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

San Bernardino, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes tied a season-high with 15 hits in their blowout win against the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night, taking game one, 9-2.

The Quakes struck first in the very first inning. Andrew Toles led things off with a double, and promptly stole third base for his seventh swipe of the year. Two batters later, Kyle Garlick hit an RBI groundout to bring in Toles and make it a 1-0 game.

Inland Empire came back and scored two runs in the second. However, both were unearned. Zach Houchins hit a routine ground ball to third baseman Matt Beaty, who misplayed it to put Houchins aboard with nobody out. Then, Jeff Boehm hit a single to right field, and Houchins went first-to-third to put runners at the corners with still none out. Boehm then stole second to put two in scoring position. Ryan Sebra and Trevor Allen each followed with RBI groundouts, to take a 2-1 lead.

The game stayed that way until the fifth, when Rancho plated four thanks to a couple of miscues by Inland Empire's defense. Joey Curletta led things off with a single and with one out, Jordan Tarsovich singled to put runners on first and second with one out.

Then the madness began.

Andrew Toles singled to right field, and manager Drew Saylor challenged the strong arm of Trevor Allen and sent Curletta home. The throw beat Curletta by a wide margin, but catcher Taylor Ward seemingly forgot to tag Curletta before he crossed home. Then, Ward threw down to second base to try and get Toles who was taking second on the throw, but he threw it away into center field, allowing Tarsovich to score to make it 3-2.

Moments later, another costly error led to two more runs, albeit unearned against Jeremy Rhoades. Tim Locastro hit a deep fly ball to left field, and Caleb Adams appeared to be camped under it. But, it hit off his glove and kicked all the way into the left-center field, allowing Toles to score and Locastro to come all the way home to score to give Rancho a 5-2 lead.

The Quakes tacked on four more insurance runs in the ninth inning. Joey Curletta led things off with a single and stole second base. Michael Ahmed then singled back up the middle to score Curletta to make it a 6-2 contest in favor of Rancho. Tarsovich followed by belting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to make it 8-2 Rancho. The Quakes scored their final run after Tim Locastro singled, moved to second on a Kyle Garlick single, and then home by a Johan Mieses single to give Rancho Cucamonga a 9-2 lead and they never looked back.

Every starter had a hit with the exception of Paul Hoenecke, and five players had multi-hit games.

Tommy Bergjans (2-1) was brilliant on Tuesday for Rancho Cucamonga, earning his second win of the season. Bergjans went seven strong innings, and allowed just five hits and two unearned runs. He walked none and struck out nine, and also had a streak of nine straight hitters retired. A.J. Vanegas and Karch Kowalczyk each tossed a scoreless inning out of the Quakes bullpen.

Jeremy Rhoades (1-3) takes the loss for Inland Empire. He pitched six innings and allowed eight hits and five runs (three earned). Dixon Llorens struggled, and put the game out of reach after giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in the ninth inning.

?With the win, the Quakes improve to 12-7, while Inland Empire drops to 5-14. Josh Sborz makes the start for Rancho Cucamonga in game two of the series on Wednesday; he is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA through three starts. Wednesday's game is an 11 a.m. start in San Bernardino. The Quakes return home on Friday, April 29th to welcome the High Desert Mavericks to town. Join us for $1 Hot Dogs, Pepsi Products and Ice Cream Sandwiches throughout the night, thanks to Family RV.
