San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to an 11-2 series-opening win over the Stockton Ports on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. With the victory, San Jose (8-8) has now won back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Aramis Garcia (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (3-for-4, RBI) had three hits each to lead a balanced Giants offensive attack. Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Steven Duggar (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) added two hits and two RBI's apiece.
Mark Reyes (1-0) earned his first win of the season after tossing a career-high tying seven innings with just two runs allowed. Reyes surrendered five hits, walked none and struck out four during his 79-pitch performance.
With the game tied 2-2, the fourth-inning rally began with a one-out single from Jonah Arenado. Brandon Bednar followed with a line drive single into left center moving Arenado to third. Johneshwy Fargas then dropped down a bunt that was fielded by Stockton starting pitcher Heath Fillmyer. The Ports hurler flipped the ball home, but Areando slid safely with the go-ahead tally. Fargas was credited with a sacrifice on the play as Bednar advanced to second. Jebavy then stepped to the plate and blasted a double off the fence in straightaway center to bring home both Bednar and Fargas for a 5-2 advantage.
The rally continued with a two-out walk to Chris Shaw before Garcia laced a single to left plating Jebavy with the fourth run of the inning. Duggar then doubled to deep left center to score both Shaw and Garcia for an 8-2 cushion. Vizcaino, Jr. followed by greeting new pitcher Matt Stalcup with a single to plate Duggar with the seventh and final run of the inning.
The Giants sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and scored seven runs on six hits.
Meanwhile, Reyes cruised throughout his outing. The left-hander retired the leadoff batter in all seven of his innings pitched. Stockton's only two runs of the contest came in the top of the fourth. Joe Bennie doubled with out in the frame before Tyler Marincov stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run homer to left to tie the game 2-2. Reyes then didn't allow another hit for the remainder of his start. He set down the Ports 1-2-3 in the fifth and sixth innings and had retired nine straight batters until Mikey White reached on an error with one out in the top of the seventh. Reyes though quickly retired the next two batters to complete his outing.
The Giants pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 11-2. With two outs, Shaw smacked a double into the left center field gap and immediately scored when the next batter, Garcia, singled. Then after back-to-back walks to Duggar and Vizcaino, Jr. loaded the bases, Arenado reached on an error - Stockton's fourth error of the game - allowing another run to score for an 11-2 advantage.
Dusten Knight (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO) threw two scoreless innings of relief to finish the game for San Jose. Knight used a double play to end the top of the eighth and then struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning.
Fillmyer (2-1) suffered the loss for Stockton after yielding nine runs (all earned) on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
The Giants' first two runs of the night came in the bottom of the second. Three straight singles from Garcia, Duggar and Vizcaino, Jr. to start the inning loaded the bases with none out. Arenado then grounded into a fielder's choice as Garcia scored and Vizcaino was forced out at second. Then with two down, Fargas delivered an RBI single pushing the lead to 2-0.
