September 12, 2021 - Double-A Northeast League (AA Northeast) - Portland Sea Dogs News Release

MAKE IT SIX-IN-A-ROW - The Sea Dogs extended their winning streak to six games with a 7-5 victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies yesterday afternoon. Ryan Fitzgerald belted his 12th home run of the year in the second inning to give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. Despite allowing the five runs, Portland starter Brayan Bello (1-3) earned his first Double-A win striking out six batters over five innings of work. The Sea Dogs cut the lead to 5-3 with a two-run double by Hudson Potts in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cameron Cannon led off the fifth inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by Tyreque Reed. Reed scored the tying run when Ronaldo Hernandez singled. With runners on second and third with two outs, Binghamton pitcher Alec Kisena balked allowing Pedro Castellanos to score the go-ahead run from third base. Binghamton threatened in the eighth inning loading the bases with no outs off Jake Thompson. Rio Gomez entered the game for the Sea Dogs striking out and getting Duplantis to ground out to end the threat.

POTTS DELIVERS WITH RUNNERS ON - Hudson Potts has continued to drive home runners this week. He has 10 multi-RBI games for the Sea Dogs this season and leads the team with four three-RBI games this year. He had now recorded multi-RBI in back- to-back games. On Friday night, Potts recorded three RBI and last night had two more with a two-run double in the fourth inning.

WELCOME BACK, WILLIAMS - Prior to yesterday's game, infielder Grant Williams has rejoined the Sea Dogs from AAA Worcester. With the Woo Sox, he was batting .265 with a triple and four RBI. Williams has been strong for Portland this year batting .271 with 10 doubles, two triples, a home run and 13 RBI. He has a .308 OBP and has only struck out 16 times in 236 at-bats.

ACTIVE STREAKS - LHP Rio Gomez has not allowed a run in his last 15 appearances spanning 23.0 innings with only 13 hits and 26 strikeouts. RHP Joan Martinez has not allowed a run in his last 10 games (12.0 innings) while allowing eight hits and striking out 14.

WHERE DO WE STAND - The Sea Dogs are currently in fourth place in the Double-A Northeast League, 2.5 games out of a playoff spot. The Akron RubberDucks remain in first place while the Somerset Patriots are in second place and the Bowie Baysox are in third. The Baysox are 1.0 game behind the Patriots. The top two teams in the league will advance to the Northeast League Championship Series which will begin September 21st.

ON THE MOUND - Jay Groome will make his Hadlock Field debut this afternoon. He made his Double-A deubt 9/4 at New Hampshire and tossed 5.0 shutout innings allowing two hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters...He began the season ranked by Baseball America as one of the Red Sox' top 10 prospects in 2017 (No. 3), 2018 (No. 1), 2019 (No. 4), 2020 (No. 8), and 2021 (No. 6. Groome is also ranked by Baseball America as having the best curveball among Red Sox minor leaguers entering the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
