Altoona Curve News Release
HARRISBURG - Altoona's offense once again sputtered on Wednesday as they dropped their second straight to the Harrisburg Senators, this time by a score of 5-2, at Metro Bank Park. Robbie Grossman went 1-for-2 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games but Brock Holt was held off the bases to halt his consecutive games on base streak at 22.
The Curve never led on Wednesday afternoon as they fell behind 4-0 after three innings thanks to a pair of two-out, two run innings off starter Kyle McPherson (1-2). In the second, McPherson retired the first two batters with ease before walking Devin Ivany. Manny Mayorson followed with a dying line drive to right that Curve RF Evan Chambers tried to make a diving catch on but came up short. The ball ended up scooting past Chambers and allowed Ivany to score the game's first run while putting Mayorson at third with at triple.
Senators starting pitcher Paul Demny (6-4) then hit a bouncing ball back towards the mound that deflected out to Holt at short but the shortstop was unable to make a play and Mayorson trotted home from third for the game's second run.
It stayed 2-0 until the third when Ivany ripped a two-out double off the wall in left-center to score Jesus Valdez and Tim Pahuta to place the 'Sens out in front, 4-0. From there, McPherson retired the last 10 batters he faced in the game to complete his six innings.
Altoona didn't get on the board until the Grossman two-out RBI single in the fifth as he drove in Charlie Cutler. Harrisburg added another run off reliever Kris Johnson before the Curve tried to mount a ninth-inning rally off 'Sens reliever Erik Davis.
Matt Curry brought the Curve within three with his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to left-center with one down in the ninth. With Altoona down to its final out and trailing 5-2, pinch hitter Jeremy Farrell singled through the left side to keep the game alive.
Jarek Cunningham followed suit and also singled to put two on with two down and Altoona had the chance to tie the game with Chambers at the plate representing the tying run. Unfortunately that is where the rally ended for the Curve as Chambers struck out to end the threat and the game.
Curry, Cutler and Cunningham each had two hits in the loss for the Curve. Johnson, who was added back to the Curve roster prior to today's game, completed two innings and allowed the one run on three hits.
Having dropped two straight, Altoona (35-41) will try and claw its way back into the series on Thursday as they'll meet the Senators (40-37) for the third game of the series beginning at 7 p.m. from Metro Bank Park. RHP Brandon Cumpton (7-6, 3.43) will search for his eighth victory of the season as he gets the starting nod for the Curve while RHP Ryan Perry (0-0, 0.00) makes his second start of the year for Harrisburg.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets and more information on Ballpark Blockparty 2012 and the upcoming Curve homestand that begins July 4th, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
