Senators Sign Defenceman Derek Smith to One-Year Contract

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 13, 2010) - The Ottawa Senators announced today they have re-signed defenceman Derek Smith to a one-year, two-way contract.

Smith, 25, spent the the 2009-10 season with Ottawa's American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, recording professional highs in goals (14), assists (37) and points (49) while accumulating 24 penalty minutes in 74 games.

The Belleville, Ont., native was recalled to the Senators on one occasion in 2009-10 and made his NHL debut on Feb. 13 in Ottawa's 4-1 loss at Detroit. In two games with the Senators, he was held scoreless while averaging 12:20 of ice time per game.

Smith, who has played three professional seasons (all with the B-Sens), has skated in 201 AHL games, recording 88 points (23 goals, 65 assists) and 91 penalty minutes. He was signed by the Senators as a free agent on April 12, 2007, after completing his collegiate career with Lake Superior State University.
