Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Harrisburg, Pa. - The Harrisburg Senators handed the Baysox a season-high fifth straight loss in a 7-6 victory Monday evening. The win completes a five-game sweep of the Baysox that began Friday evening and included a doubleheader sweep Sunday. The loss drops the Baysox to 24-28, their worst record of the season.
While the Baysox had been dominated in many of the losses in the series, Bowie actually out-hit Harrisburg on Monday, but was still unable to come away with a win. The Baysox recorded 10 hits to Harrisburg's eight, but were unable to close the gap after the Senators scored six runs in the second and third innings.
After being shut out in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday, the Baysox got on the board first in Monday's game. Facing Harrisburg starter Tanner Roark, right fielder Ronnie Welty singled to left field and after left fielder LJ Hoes drew a walk, third baseman Billy Rowell drove in both runners with a double to center field to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.
The Senators took the lead right back in the bottom of the second inning against right-handed starting pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Bill Rhinehart drew a lead off walk and moved to third on a double to left field by Archie Gilbert. After Stephen King struck out, Jonathan Tucker drew a walk to load the bases and Steve Lombardozzi drove in two runs with a single to right field that moved Tucker to third. Josh Johnson grounded out, but pushed across Tucker to give Harrisburg a 3-2 lead.
The back and forth battle continued as the Baysox retook the lead in the top of the third inning. First baseman Robbie Widlansky hit a lead off home run to right field and then designated hitter Caleb Joseph doubled to left field. After catcher Steve Lerud flied out to left field, Welty drew a walk and both batters advanced on a wild pitcher from Roark with Hoes batting. Hoes grounded out, but plated Joseph to put the Baysox back in the lead 4-3.
Once again, the Senators used a big bottom of the third inning to regain the lead. Tyler Moore hit a lead off single to left field and Derek Norris drew a walk before Bill Rhinehart hit a three-run home run to right-center field to give Harrisburg the 6-4 lead.
Facing left-handed reliever Nick Bierbrodt, the Senators added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Moore hits the team's second home run of the game to lead off the inning and give Harrisburg a 7-4 lead.
The Baysox attempted to rally in the seventh and eighth innings, but fell short. Facing Matt Chico, second baseman Greg Miclat hit a one out single to center field and then stole second before scoring when Joseph singled to center field with two outs. Bowie then added another run in the top of the eighth inning against Carlos Martinez. Welty hit a lead off triple and scored when Hoes grounded out to the shortstop to bring the Baysox back to 7-6, but short of finishing the comeback.
Pelzer earned his sixth loss in his last seven starts as he lasted just three innings before being removed after allowing six earned runs on five hits. Bierbrodt pitched three and one-third innings in relief of Pelzer and allowed one earned run on two hits. Right-handed reliever Raul Rivero finished the game with one and two-thirds scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
Starting his first game of the season at third base, Rowell had one of his best nights of the season as he drove in the Baysox first two runs of the game with his second double of the season in the top of the second inning.
With Sunday's loss, the Baysox have now lost nine of their last 10 games against the first-place Senators, who are currently on an eight-game winning streak after five wins against Bowie.
Tuesday, RHP Steve Johnson (3-1, 1.98) takes the mound for the Baysox as they take on the Richmond Flying Squirrels. His opponent will be RHP Daryl Maday (1-3, 3.77).
The Baysox return home for a six game homestand Tuesday, May 31. Several exciting promotions and theme nights are scheduled for the upcoming homestand, including Golf Night, Wednesday, June 1, Harry Potter Party, Friday, June 3, Negro League Tribute Night, Saturday, June 4 and Educator Appreciation Day with special guest Dennis Haskins aka Mr. Belding, Sunday, June 5.
