Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Altoona used two four-run innings and another stellar start from Mike Colla (4-1) to earn its first road series win on Monday afternoon with an, 8-0, shutout win over the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium. Colla worked six innings and did not allow a run while striking out two. He finishes the month of May with a 3-0 record and a 1.41 ERA in six starts. It is the fifth shutout win of the year for the Curve.
It didn't seem like Altoona would get much going in the game as Binghamton starter Brad Holt (2-4) began the game by setting down the first 12 Curve batters he faced. Things changed in the fifth as Holt issued a leadoff walk to Jordy Mercer. After Matt Curry flew out, Jeremy Farrell singled to place two on for Kris Watts.
Watts delivered with his first home run of the season as he lined a three-run homer over the wall in right-center. Altoona wasn't done in the frame as Brad Chalk, who reached on an error by Jose Coronado, came around later in the inning to score on a Holt wild pitch. After 4.5, Altoona led, 4-0.
Altoona mimicked the fifth inning when it came to bat in the sixth against new reliever Roy Merritt. Quincy Latimore began the inning with his fourth home run of the year and his second of the series to put the Curve in front, 5-0. The next five hitters in the inning all reached, including Curry, who found his first Double-A hit with a single through the left side. A run came home on an RBI double by Farrell and two came around on an RBI single by Chalk.
That would be all Colla and the pitching staff would need as Bryan Morris closed out the game with three scoreless, hitless innings for his second professional save. Morris struck out a pair over his three innings of work.
Back at a season-best two games over .500, Altoona (26-24) will travel to Trenton, N.J. to take on the Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, on Tuesday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. from Waterfront Park. RHP Aaron Pribanic (4-2, 2.60) will make the start for the Curve in the first game this year with the Thunder while Trenton counters with RHP Craig Heyer (4-2, 2.74).
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
