TODAY: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Akron Aeros will meet in the finale of a four-game series...The Aeros rallied for an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Chung Chen supplied a pinch-hit, walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth as Akron defeated the Flying Squirrels 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of 5,645 fans at Canal Park.
TODAY'S STARTERS: Right-hander Justin Fitzgerald gets the start in the series finale for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win in his last outing 5/25 against Erie...Allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings...Struck out five batters and walked none...Outing was his longest of the season...Five strikeouts matched a season high...First outing of the season without issuing a walk...All five hits he allowed were singles including two infield singles...Retired the leadoff batter in five of his seven innings on the mound...Recorded six groundouts and six flyouts/popouts...Threw 97 pitches, 63 strikes...Threw 14 pitches or less in four of his seven innings on the mound...Did not throw more than 18 pitches in an inning (4th)...Threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of the 26 batters he faced...Spent the entire 2010 season with Advanced-A San Jose...First season as a starter after appearing exclusively in relief in his first two pro campaigns...Went 10-6 with a 3.45 ERA in 26 games, 25 starts...Struck out 116 batters and walked 46 in 146 innings...Ranked 4th in the California League in ERA (3.45), 3rd in opponent batting average (.258) and tied for 5th with 10 wins....Named a California League Mid-Season All-Star...Made three postseason starts with San Jose, going 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA (4R/18.2 IP)...Made 39 relief appearances with Low-A Augusta in 2009...Went 2-2 with a 3.70 ERA, striking out 63 and walking 27 in 56 innings...Made pro debut in 2008, going a combined 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 17 appearances...Selected in the 11th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of California-Davis.

ROCK CLIMBING: The Flying Squirrels failed to get above the .500 mark with yesterday's 2-1 loss to Akron...The last time Richmond had a winning record was 4/15 when the club was 5-4...Since then, the team has been at .500 four times but has been unable to get a win on any of those occasions.
BAD DAY: The Flying Squirrels fell to 2-8 in day games after night games with yesterday's loss and 4-8 overall during the day...The club also fell to 6-10 in one-run games...Thirty-three of the team's first 49 games have been decided by three runs or less (14-19).
ERROR ALERT: The Flying Squirrels have committed an error in each of their last seven games, the longest streak of games with an error on the season for the club...Richmond has committed 15 errors over its last seven games including a season-high four errors 5/23 against Erie...The 15 errors have led to six unearned runs...The Flying Squirrels rank fifth in the Eastern League with a .977 fielding percentage and the team has committed 45 errors on the season, tied for fourth-most in the league...Overall, the club has allowed 28 unearned runs on the season.
THE JOLLY ROGER: Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-3 yesterday including his second home run of the season yesterday...The 24-year-old is batting .329 (25-for-76) over his last 20 games with six doubles, a triple, two home runs, nine RBIs, and 11 runs scored...He has also recorded multi-hit games in 10 of those 20 contests...Kieschnick has raised his batting average from a season-low .173 to .239.
MAY IS FOR MATOS: Right-hander Osiris Matos allowed one hit over three scoreless innings Saturday night...In nine appearances this month, the 26-year-old has tossed 18 scoreless innings, limiting opponents to a .133 (8-for-60) batting average against...It is the longest scoreless innings streak by a Richmond pitcher this season...He has struck out 11 batters while walking two over that span and has lowered his ERA from 5.02 to 2.23.
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 2.82 ERA through 49 games, the only staff with a sub-three ERA...The club ranks second in the league with 398 strikeouts, and the pitching staff has logged a league-high 456 1/3 innings of work.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN: The Flying Squirrels are in a stretch where they will play 13 of 16 games on the road...The club is 7-15 on the road, and it is batting .198 (146-for-737) and averaging 2.91 runs per game (64R/22G) in 22 road contests...Richmond just completed a stretch of playing 10 out of 13 games at home...The Flying Squirrels are 17-10 at home and are batting .253 (237-for-938) in 27 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.30 runs per game at home (116R/27G).
