Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are pleased to announce that Doug Selby, Kristin Wolford, and Vince Klein will be honored as part of the team's Opening Day festivities tonight. The Doubledays will host the Batavia Muckdogs at 7:05pm in the first game of the 2016 season for both clubs.
DOUG SELBY, who served as City Manager for the City of Auburn from August 2011 until April 2016, will throw the season's ceremonial first pitch. Selby is currently the President of Auburn Community Baseball, the non-profit organization that operates the Doubledays franchise on behalf of the City, a position he has held since December 2014. Under Selby's leadership, Falcon Park has undergone several upgrades and improvements, including a new playing surface and sound system, an expanded picnic area, the installation of free wi-fi throughout the ballpark, and the purchase of a new point of sale system for the 2016 season.
A moment of silence will be observed before the game in honor of KRISTIN WOLFORD, a former sports reporter and editor for The Citizen, who passed away last month. Wolford covered Doubledays baseball among many other sports and events during her decade-long tenure at The Citizen. Wolford's family will also serve as the Doubledays' honorary captains for the game and will assist new Doubledays manager Jerad Head with the season's first line-up card exchange and umpire meeting.
The family of Auburn professional baseball founding father VINCE KLEIN will present a plaque to the Doubledays to be hung at Falcon Park as part of the pre-game program. Klein was an original member of the Auburn Community Baseball board of directors and helped lead the fundraising drives that brought professional baseball to Auburn in 1958. He also held the roles of Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the club.
"We are very happy to be able to honor three individuals who have meant so much to baseball here in Auburn as part of our Opening Day celebration," said Doubledays General Manager Mike Voutsinas. "The contributions made by Doug Selby, Kristin Wolford, and Vince Klein cannot be overlooked and it is with great pride that we will honor each of them tonight."
JEANNIE HINES-CLINTON will sing the first National Anthem of the season. Hines-Clinton will play the role of Mrs. Kipfer in the upcoming Finger Lakes Musical Theater Festival production of "From Here to Eternity", her tenth show at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse.
Stadium gates will open at 6:00pm tonight and the pre-game ceremony, which will also include player introductions, will begin at approximately 6:30pm. Tickets for Opening Day and all other Doubledays home games can be purchased in person at Falcon Park, by calling 315-255-2489, or online at AuburnDoubledays.com.
