Lake Monsters Drop Season Opener 1-0 At Lowell On Friday Night
June 17, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
??LOWELL, MA - Chris Madera's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 5th inning accounted for the only run of the game as the Lowell Spinners shutout the Vermont Lake Monsters 1-0 in the New York-Penn League season opener for both teams at LeLecheur Park on Friday night.
Madera's RBI single to center scored Isaias Lucena, who had led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a one-out wild pickoff attempt by Vermont starter Heath Bowers before scoring on the two-out hit. Bowers (0-1) allowed just the one unearned run on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. Reliever Yordys Alejo tossed two scoreless innings, while Tyler Willman retired all four batters he faced with two strikeouts.
The Lake Monsters offensively had plenty of opportunities to score as Vermont had at least one baserunner in each of the first eight innings, including the leadoff batter five times, but ended the night 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. It marks the first time in the Lake Monsters 23-year history that Vermont has been shutout in a season opener.
James Terrell went 3-for-5 and Carson Blair was 2-for-4 to combine for five of the Lake Monsters eight hits on the night. Three Lowell pitchers combined on the shutout, including 2 2/3 scoreless innings from reliever Pat Goetz (1-0) to earn the win in relief of starter Michael Kopech (four hits, four walks and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings). Dioscar Romero had four strikeouts over the final two scoreless innings to earn the save.
Vermont has now lost each of its last five openers, including three straight to the Spinners, and are now 7-16 all-time in their 23 season debuts. The Lake Monsters will look for a split of the two-game series at Lowell on Saturday starting at 5:05 pm before returning to historic Centennial Field for the home opener at 5:05 pm on Sunday against the Connecticut Tigers.
