ValleyCats power past Tigers on Opening Night

TROY, N.Y. - The Connecticut Tigers (0-1) lost to the Tri-City ValleyCats, affiliate of the Houston Astros, 13-1 on Opening Night from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Stephen Wrenn started the scoring for the ValleyCats against Tigers starter Ryan Castellanos. Wrenn hit his first professional home run over the left field fence to lead off the bottom of the first inning.

After giving up a run in the second, Castellanos settled down and tossed back-to-back scoreless frames for the Tigers. Castellanos finished the night throwing four innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.

With a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the ValleyCats scored five times against the Tigers bullpen. The five-run frame included four doubles and was highlighted by a two-run double by centerfielder Daz Cameron.

Trailing 8-0 heading into the seventh, Joey Havrilak (1-4) lead off the inning with a base-hit. Blaise Salter then provided the first Tigers run of the season, crushing an RBI double over the head of Cameron to score Havrilak from first.

Salter finished the game going 2-4, the only Tiger to produce a multi-hit performance.

Tri-City punctuated the night with a five-run seventh inning. Taylor Jones hit a grand slam home run to cap the scoring for the ValleyCats.

Yordy Cabrera was exceptional out of the bullpen, pitching a 1-2-3 eighth inning that included two punchouts.

The Tigers seek out their first win tomorrow night against Tri-City in the series finale of the two-game series. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
