Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY-- The Hudson Valley Renegades began their 2016 season in fine fashion as they defeated the Aberdeen Ironbirds 4-2 in front of 4,973 fans at Dutchess Stadium Friday night.Hudson Valley started the scoring in the second. Designated hitter Jon Popadics led off the inning with a single then came in to score on an RBI triple by Angel Perez. Left fielder Oscar Rojas followed that with an RBI groundout to plate Perez and give the Renegades a 2-0 lead.
The Renegades would add to their lead with a two-run sixth. Shortstop Joseph Astacio and centerfielder Garrett Whitley led off the inning with a single and double respectively. That set the stage for first baseman Kewby Meyer who grounded a single to center to score both men and put Hudson Valley on top 4-0.
Aberdeen would get on the board in the eighth. Shortstop Guillermo Salas led of the frame with a single then moved to second on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI double by centerfielder Ryan McKenna. After a groundout and strikeout, designated hitter Randolph Gassaway singled in McKenna to make the score 4-2 Hudson Valley.
However that was as close as Aberdeen got as reliever Tim Ingram bounced back after that difficult eighth to pitch a scoreless ninth and give the Renegades the win. After starter Adrian Navas departed, reliever Spencer Moran pitched two scoreless innings for Hudson Valley to keep the Ironbirds at bay.
Navas (0-1) was sensational in picking up his first professional win tossing five scoreless innings and striking out two while allowing only one hit. He retired 15 of the 16 men he faced, the one exception being an infield single by Ronarsy Ledesma in the second.
Lefty Alex Wells (0-1) was saddled with the loss in his professional debut. The Australian allowed two earned runs on four hits in five innings of work. He also walked one and struck out four.
The Renegades wrap up their brief two-game homestand tomorrow with a 7:05 contest against Aberdeen, which will be followed by another fireworks show. Renegade righty Eduar Lopez will be opposed by Aberdeen southpaw Travis Seabrooke. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to www.hvrenegades.com.
