See-saw scoring sends Stars to shootout

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and the Milwaukee Admirals met for the second game of a home-and-home series on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. The Stars and Admirals combined for several new records in the game, including most combined goals, 13; most combined power-play goals, eight; most combined shots, 83; and tied the most shots by the Stars, 45. The final score in the shootout, was Milwaukee 7 and Iowa 6. By virtue of going to the shootout, Iowa has now obtained at least one point in six of their last home games.

After allowing the first goal for the fourth straight game and subsequently allowing a two goal lead, David Oliver and Junior Lessard evened the score at two with power-play goals. Oliver scored his second goal of the game at 6:14 of the second period. Milwaukee evened the score on the game's fifth consecutive power-play goal. Yan Stastny again gave Iowa a lead with a shorthanded goal. Goalie Mike Smith picked-up his third assist of the season on Stastny's 12th goal of the season. Defenseman Dan Jancevski gave Iowa a two-goal lead with the game's sixth power-play goal and the game's seventh special teams goal.

Jordin Tootoo and Simon Gamache evened the score at five apiece, however Iowa's Toby Petersen put the Stars ahead just :19 seconds later. Milwaukee's Kris Beech tied the score at six with little more that 13 minutes left in the third period. Shortly thereafter, the Stars had Loui Eriksson's apparent game-winning goal waved-off and the two teams went to overtime. Iowa fired seven shots on Milwaukee goalie Pekka Rinne, while Iowa's Mike Smith made three huge saves to send the game to the shootout.

The Stars Vojtech Polak and Jamie Johnson scored in the shootout, but Libor Pivko, Rich Peverly and Simon Gamache scored for Milwaukee, giving them the extra point in the standings.
