Winnipeg, MB - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights finished off a two-game sweep of the Manitoba Moose, winning 5-1 on Saturday night at the MTS Centre. Richie Regehr, assigned to the Knights from the Calgary Flames the night before, scored two goals and an assist to propel the Knights' attack.
As with the night before, the Knights scored first, this time in the first period. Lynn Lyons threw the puck behind the Manitoba net to Warren Peters. He wheeled out in front and tucked the puck under goaltender Wade Flaherty for this tenth goal of the year, his second of the weekend.
The Knights doubled their lead on their first powerplay of the Knight. Regehr kept a clearing attempt, walked down the left wing wall and beat Flaherty with a quick shot. That goal chased Flaherty and brought in Sebastien Centomo.
Just 1:38 later, the Knights had another powerplay. This time, Mark Giordano's shot hit the post and ricocheted to Eric Nystrom who knocked the puck into near empty net for this eleventh goal of the year.
The Knights began the second period much the way they played the first. After finishing off a penalty kill, Regehr struck again. He kept the puck in at the far point and rifled a shot past Centomo off the left post. The goal made it 4-0, a score that stood up through the period.
The Moose finally solved goalie Brent Krahn when defenseman Brett Skinner got free for a wrist shot that broke off of Krahn and rolled across the goal line.
The Knights squashed any hopes of a comeback bid when Brandon Prust pounced on the rebound of a shot by Peters and beat Centomo for his seventh goal of the year.
Krahn finished with 20 saves and his 14th win of the year. He has now allowed just two goals in his last nine periods of hockey. Omaha has now won three straight and four in a row on the road.
The Knights record improves to 21-23-2-7. They'll return home briefly to host the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m. Then, the Knights embark on their longest road trip of the season, a five-game nine-day jaunt that will take them to Hamilton, Manchester, Rochester and Toronto.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
