Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Jaycob Brugman drove in one run and scored another as Midland tripped Corpus Christi 3-1 Wednesday at Whataburger Field before 3,744.
Visiting starter Joel Seddon (1-2), who entered the night with a 17.69 ERA, permitted one run, three hits and walked three over 5 2/3 innings and 73 pitches (43 strikes).
Corey Walter earned a 3 1/3-innings save, his first of 2016. Walter went 10-up, 10-down and whiffed two.
Center fielder Teoscar Hernandez prevented Midland (11-8) from scoring in the fourth, his perfect throw to catcher Alfredo Gonzalez nabbing Viosergy Rosa for the last out and preserving a scoreless tie. Rosa was sent by RockHounds manager Ryan Christenson on Beau Taylor's single.
That marked the end of the evening for Hooks starter David Paulino, who left with a 78-pitch count, including 52 strikes. Paulino logged four hits, a walk, and seven strikeouts.
J.P. Sportman welcomed Juan Santos (0-1) to Double-A with a booming double to right-center. Brugman scored Sportman two outs later via a single up the middle, Hernandez almost getting the RockHounds left fielder on another homeward throw.
Brugman ultimately crossed for a 2-0 Midland lead; he was wild pitched to third and then home by Santos three pitches later.
In the home fifth, consecutive no-out doubles by J.D. Davis and Conrad Gregor snapped Corpus Christi's scoreless inning streak at 25.
Seddon turned the game over to Walter with two aboard and two away in the sixth. Walter induced a fielder's choice from J.D. Davis to vanquish the threat.
Midland insurance came during the ninth when Sportman raced home from second on Gonzalez's errant pickoff attempt of Franklin Barreto at first.
The Hooks pitching staff has recorded double-digit strikeouts in each of the last 15 games. Corpus Christi stands 9-9 and has dropped six of seven.
The series and homestand finale is Thursday at 7:05 as Corpus Christi sends Kyle Smith (0-2) against Dylan Covey (0-1). It's Thirsty Thursday with discounted beer and soda from Stripes. Ballpark gates open at 6:05.
