Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Gabe Gross' solo home run in the top of the ninth inning was all the offense necessary to give the Nashville Sounds a 1-0 victory over the Portland Beavers Thursday night at PGE Park.

The game - the Beavers' annual "Mullet Night" - was played before 12,812, the second-largest crowd of the season for the Beavers.

The Beavers (45-68) got an impressive start from left-hander Matt Teague, a first-year professional who made his Triple-A debut after being called up from Class A Eugene earlier in the day. Teague, an eighth-round selection of the San Diego Padres in the recent June draft, struck out five and gave up just one hit and one walk in his spot start. The 22-year-old faced just one batter over the minimum before being lifted after 74 pitches and the game tied 0-0.

Gross' one-out home run, his first for the Sounds, came on a 1-0 pitch from Scott Cassidy and narrowly cleared the wall in right-center.

Nashville starter R.A. Dickey struck out seven and allowed five hits and five walks over seven strong innings in a no-decision. The win went to reliever Mitch Stetter, while Cassidy took the loss, his second in his last three outings.

Luther Hackman, who went down in defeat Wednesday night against the Beavers, pitched the 1-2-3 ninth to get his 15th save.

The Beavers play host to the Sounds (68-44) again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: The Beavers announced Thursday night that left-hander Shawn Estes, a veteran of 12 major league seasons, is scheduled to start Saturday night against Nashville. Estes is on his way back from "Tommy John" surgery, a procedure he underwent to his left elbow in June 2006 ... the Beavers held several mullet-inspired contests and promotions, including hub-cap tossing and a star-studded toilet-seat horseshoe competition ... the Beavers have been shut out five times this season.
