
Second Inning Surge Powers Captains to Series Win

Lake County Captains News Release
(Dayton, OH) - The Lake County Captains (52-44) sent 12 batters to the plate in a six-run second inning that propelled them to an 8-3 win on Sunday afternoon against the Dayton Dragons (50-46) at Day Air Ballpark.
Jhonkensy Noel led off the second inning for the Captains with a solo home run for his first as a Captain to give Lake County a 1-0 lead. With one out Victor Nova singled, then Raynel Delgado bunted for a base hit. Joe Donovan reached on an error to load the bases with one-out. Julian Escobedo delivered a two-run double down the right field line that plated Nova and Delgado. With two-outs George Valera walked to load the bases again for Joe Naranjo who smacked a two-run single to put the Captains on top 5-0. Noel came to the plate again and singled for his second hit of the inning to drive in Valera and cap the Captains scoring at 6-0.
In the bottom of the third Dayton got on the scoreboard. With two outs Michael Siani got hit by a pitch, then Quin Cotton doubled to drive him in and make the score 6-1, Captains.
The Captains tacked on another run in the top of the fourth. Jose Tena led off with a double. With two outs Micah Pries singled in Tena, giving the Captains a 7-1 advantage.
The Dragons answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run to make the score 7-2. James Free singled then moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Juan Martinez smacked a single to plate Free.
The back and forth battle continued in the sixth inning when Joe Donovan ripped an RBI double down the left field line that drove in Pries to push the Captains lead to 8-2.
In the bottom of the sixth Victor Ruiz drilled a solo home run to left field to bring the Dragons back within five, trailing 8-3.
Dayton loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning but could not score after a line drive back to Captains reliever Tim Herrin, then a strikeout from Jerson Ramirez and pop out ended the threat. Ramirez recorded the final eight outs of the game to hold the lead for Lake County.
Mason Hickman (7-6) earned the win for Lake County. He threw 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and three runs with one walk and one strikeout.
JC Keys (3-2) took the loss for Dayton. He allowed six runs, two earned on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
The Captains return home for a six-game series with the Great Lakes Loons starting on Tuesday. First pitch at Classic Park is set for 7:00 p.m.
